This may be a bit of a silly question but I have 3 lids that i no longer use. They are quite old and I don't want anyone to end up using them again. I'm therefore a bit wary of just taking them to the refuse tip incase some plonker lifts them out to try sell or use.

What do you guys do with old helmets? Maybe theres somewhere I can recycle them?

Cheers,

Monk

Cut 1 chin strap off, then donate to local St Johns for motorcycle accident training, it's what I do with mine.

Fire service or Police might be interested for training.

When I bought a replacement lid for the O/H a few months ago, the shop assistant offered to cut the straps off in front of us, then dispose of it for us
Thumbs Up for decent customer service for once

I donate mine to the emergency services guys. My DAS instructor told me about it. As others have said, cut off the straps and take it into the local ambulance/fire station or St John place. They love them for training motorcyclist procedures, as it's too expensive for them to shell out on brand new lids just to cut them off a dummy.

If you can't find anyone to donate them to, cut the straps off then smash the shit out of it with a hammer (surprisingly hard work and lots of fun!) or make something out of it; someone else suggested a planter, one of mine is going to become a hi fi.

A bit harsh to call a motorbiking casualty a dummy...
Sad

Its always useful keeping at least one old helmet whether its for a pillion or as a spare should you need it i.e. visor gets smashed or ripped off in the wind some other problem occurs.

Hi bud, as others have said the emergency services or RTC training is a good place to start, but before you cut the straps off though I would ask who ever you donate to if they would prefer them attached, the reason I am saying this is that being a retained firefifghter, and having just completed an RTC first aid course, we were taught on how to remove a motorcycle helmet from a casualty, a very in depth and complicated procedure, it helps greatly if the chin straps are intact, being so many different type's, to make it as realistic as possible, I won't go into detail about the removal of a helmet in a RTC but the straps aid the removal, they are never cut, it would move the head to much and create serious complications, thats my tuppence worth...
cheers, Bambi

To stop some twat using it (legally), crashing, and then dying. Some people have a conscience.

If it's a road legal helmet, with the straps, then whats the problem if its fine, just leave it around for someone to help themselves to, is what I was saying, who knows maybe some helmetless ped boy will find it and go Ooo I need me a helmet!

That the groups of little kids on dirt bikes and no helmets i keep seeing around leicester o.O

Personally i'd sell it as they're all worth a few bob

Those kind of helmetless pedboys are the ones I rather keep out of the gene pool. Chances are they're all spongers anyway, they get enough hand outs.

I'm going to drop one of my old lids off at a fire station. Do I literally just walk in and give it to them? Laughing

Dont want anyone using them as they are up to 10+ years old so won't do a thing in an accident other than fall to bits!

So just like any other helmet then.

Helmets don't do as much as you seem to think they do.

My instructor used to have a few which he dropped onto a kerb/hit with a hammer etc, then cut them in half...

used them to show that damage may not be visible on the outside shell of the helmet, but after they've done their job once, they're useless.

Perhaps a local training school would be interested in them for this purpose?

Mine end up in the loft as a reminder of my past as I can't bear to throw them away. My 'timeline' goes Phil Read Replica, AGV red & black, Bell, an assortment of Shoei and a Box flip-up. Who knows, one day somebody might want them as ornaments or props...

I've seen a few training centres that were dodgy enough to use them as the gear for trainees!

I don't understand the intial quote, you haven't clarified any actual use to damage them, so why does a 10 year age mean they're less functional than a 6month old one?

Do helmets come with a 'use within date' these days?
..that is a real question, I haven't bought one in about 4 or 5 years.
