Hey all.... Dodgy forum huh...

Oh well, Anyways...
My Bro In Law has been riding bike since he was 17... and he recons that instead of me buying bike boots i should get me some doc martins.
He says they stop u from getting ure foot scratched to shit and they are more practical for goin out... What do you guys recon?
P.S Do u guys know of any Sites that i can buy me a new textile bike jacket ( Not leather )... Cheers,

Personally i'm not all that fond of Dr Martins and they cant be as safe as a good pair of boots. A decent pair might cost you a bit but they have the protection for your shins and your ankles should the worst ever happen.

As summy says dm's are fine for walking in but the leather won't protect you from damaging your ankles etc at more the 20mph. Get some decent boots, I've got some sidi vertebras expensive but worth it.

My advice is you cannot spend enough money on good quality clothing, you might save a few quid getting Dr Martins, but you cant buy new feet, so go get some money and buy yourself a proper set of bike boots. Personally i recommend Sidi's.

I'd definatley reccomend proper bike boots for any kinda reasonable protection.
I came off my NSR wearing Leather Hitec Magnums (Assault/Patrol boots) a while ago. It was pretty slow speed* (definatley <25mph, proably slower) but it still dug a big hole in the boots and wore almost all the way through the fairly thick leather. The bike did slide on my boot a little so that'd made it a bit worse but had it been any faster I would have been in serious trouble.
I still use the boots as their comfortable to walk in at work etc., but I'm going to get some decent bike boots for next summer.

btw. my flat mate wears his bike boots at work all day (working in Sainsburys, so lots of walking) and they haven't got that knackered after about 9 months.

* I alway got my peg down on one corner on the way home... this time I thought "just keep it down a bit longer" unfortunatley I stayed cranked over until the camber changed, at which point the rest of the bike touched down as well.

Definately go for a decent pair of boots, as ankles can very easily be squashed!
I paid £50 for mine a year ago. I wear them every day to go to lectures in, and they are still 'just about' holding together!

Look out for the good deals going in the sales.

Sounds bit like my story! Showing off puttin the bike down near low enough 2 scrape the mirrors outside a pub on a roundabout, hit a bottle, lost the front wheel and ended up showing off how well i bounced up the road!

Yes, I have a nice pair of steel toe cap docs which i have to wear for work (umm, what am I going to drop on my feet exactly....a coffee cup?!), and I tried to ride in them to work, but it was hopeless. Get some proper boots. Definately

Ok, Thanx for all the input, i was looking at a pair of Sidi Vertebra chrome ones b4 this whole issue came up, the ones with chrome on the shin and ankle.... they look pretty cool...
I'l go for them, i'l just carry extra shoes in the pillion seat or a bag if i'm goin anywhere that requires fashion...

Stay away from steel toe capped boots like you do from Volvos Smile

. Afaik steel toe capped boots have two major problems:

Firstly the metal sliding along the ground can significantly heat up and burn your toes.

And much worse, if you land on the toecap, or worse the bike lands on it, it can quite easily cut your toes clean off!!

My poor toes! And the only reasons I hated my docs was becase they're a size too big for me, they shred my ankles to pieces and I couldn't change gear properly (kept managing to stamp the gears down two at a time). It was only a one-off, becuase I'm stupid and forgot to take my bike boots to work.

I like to wear mine (just to be on the safe side) but I sometimes feel like a prat when someone pulls up on their fireblade and looks at me like I am trying to be some kind of wannabe Superbike rider. Embarassed

Anyone else feel the same or does everyone just ride around in their plastic shellsuits when they are on a ride.

I wear full leathers, sometime a one-piece or seperate leather jacket and jeans when on rides on the NSR. I always wear boots (Sidi or Alpinestars) when in leathers too. I'am not really bothered what other 'bikers' think - Its gear for my own protection. I see a lot of guys on 125's and even 50's wearing leathers, and have been to race-meets and track days to see 125's being raced, its a requirement to wear full leathers then!.
On occassions I will ride short distances in just jeans and sportswear tops, and trainers too, but feel more safer wearing the right stuff.

I dunno if its widely available outside N.Ireland, but Race-tec gear is very good and not too expensive so it makes it ideal for students like myself!

1 piece suits 4 300 quid!

Stew, dont feel like a prat mate, wear your leathers, who cares what other bikers think anyway, if you come off without gear you'll have more to worry about than what they think. Im not being morbid, but a lot of people worry to much about what they look like on there bikes, saftey is more important than looks (damm i sound like my dad) Smile

but seriously your better off with leathers on. When i used to have my NSR i wore leathers all the time, and when im on the CityFly which i use to go to work i wear leather trousers and a buffalo jacket. I wouldnt leave the house on my XJR without leathers unless i was going to the corner shop on it or on a short journey. Mr Tetleys advice is wear your gear and dont give a flying fuck what other people think Smile

I wear full leathers on my NSR, partly because my dear Mum has a heart failure every time I go out on it and lectures me about the dangers of riding a bike every...well every time I see her really.

The only reason I feel daft wearing them is because they don;t fit me properly (I couldn't get any small enough, the closest I got were size 8's and I feel like a pregnant hippo!), though cos I'm such a midget from a distance my bike looks pretty big....so I park it over the road on any meets!

There's also lots of good things about leather....

I usually wear my full leathers for medium to long journeys and for short jorneys just a leather jacket and jeans!!

It should be fairly easy to get the leathers modified. My better half got some made up from scratch in Nottingham when we lived over that way, and the cost was not excessive. The other plus point is that if they fit properly they are less likely to snag on anything when you fall off, so you should just slide rather than start to tumble.

Any bike meets going at the moment? Havent been to Bassets Pole since about November, and then it was almost empty.
