So, I spend most of the year in the Netherlands but want a UK bike for when I'm over there. Leaving the bike at my parent's house in between visits.

Problem is I cannot get UK insurance because I 'live' in NL and I can't get NL insurance on a UK bike.

I have no idea what to do, I'm picking up the bike on Saturday, any ideas?

Does you dad ride at all, or fancy being insured on the bike? Reason i ask is you could probably be added to a policy as a named rider, for occasional use etc.

Don't have a dad. My grandad has a full bike license but is over 80 and has never ridden anything above a 125. I stuck a quote through as I had the same idea and nearly everyone refused to quote; the ones that did came out more than the bike is worth!

I don't see what it's got to do with the insuance company, where you spend your time.
Surely if your bike is registered, in your name, at a UK address, to all intents and purposes it's a UK bike belonging to a UK citizen.
Don't tell them you live in the Netherlands.
How do people who work on the rigs do it?
How do people in the forces do it?
My next door neighbour, used to spend 8 months of the year drilling for oil in Libya, he managed to get insurance.
I'd ask him how he did it but he's not around anymore, RIP, (not related to the recent problems)!
I've got bank accounts, credit cards and a paypal account all registered at a UK address, I haven't spent more than two weeks there in the last 6 years.

Sorry mate, read parents and assumed. Well that's that idea out the window.

I have to agree, i don't see why insurers care about this stuff so much. I'd understand them charging a little more because you won't be near your bike, but surely you only using it on occasion makes you less likely to crash and kill all the kittens?

The only solution I can think of is to insure it as if you lived at your parents on a more permanent basis (yes, lie about it). I cannot see any issue with this from a moral point of view. The bike is parked at that address while not in use, and you're only going to ride it when you are in the UK.

I guess you could go for pay as you go, if anyone still offers it, but then the bike is uninsured while you are out of the UK.

Of no use at all but my insurance gives 365 days European cover but you obviously have to have the bike registered in your country of residence.

No problem, he died 30 years ago and I have no memory of him. I generally say parent's because if I say mum I get questions about the divorce Smile

Any way, I tried day insure £44 for the weekend! The full quote came through as £190 before I mentioned living in NL. I've got another lead - some broker in Wales. I really think I shouldn't've told them now...

Yeah, the lie about it is an attractive option... I rang up again and badgered a manager, they're contacting the underwriter and think they can get a TPO option pushed through, but I'll see.

Yeah, had a UK driving license for 14.5 years and the bike for 3.5.

The welsh broker advertises lots of things including extended European stays but closes their offices between 1&2. Quick coffee then I'll call them.

Bloody hurrah!

I've finally got cover by a long string of being put through:

Adrian Flux -> Call Connections -> Swinton for an AXA policy. From what I've been reading AXA are pretty much the only people who do it. Even better, I saved £1 from my original quote with dial direct.

Just do it over the internet and don't mention where you live?

If you've got a license i dont see why there would be a problem. Although UK is a dick about red tape and insurance, regardless of commonsense.

You might be able to get a 'mate' to do it for you and add you to the policy and you give him the money? o.O

I honestly can't see why this would be an issue. You'll axiomatically be "resident" in the UK when you're using it (is there an unambiguous legal definition of "resident"? Resident for tax purposes? Resident for voting?).

If it's TPO then their is risk is only when you're riding it, or if it's blagged. But it'll be kept at the insured address, which is occupied, and plenty of bikes sit around for years without ever moving.

I wouldn't have thought twice about just putting in the bike's home address and taking the best quote.

I agree, I just don't get it. I'm resident of both countries for tax purposes I was told by Adrian Flux it's fairly easy for cars but they had to put me through to call collect for bikes.

I only mentioned it to dial direct because I wanted them to post the docs direct. They couldn't do it at all, even spoke to some of their underwriters basing it on a TPO policy and still not.

Well in the end Swinton & MCE did it and for £187 on a ducati monster (first big bike) I'm happy in the end.

I've always fancied a monster. If you need a good insurance area to store it for a few months then give me a shout, I'll keep it warm for you. Wink
