Hi,

Me and my partner have just started doing a bit of 2-up on the zzr and I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience using those belt things for your pillion to hold on to.

I heard someone say they are good because your passenger get's a good idea of which way you're about to turn and it gives them a comfy way to hold on when you decided to make a quick get away!

I didn't have the chance to question them about the item, so over to you BCF

Thanks for any advice

Use them everytime I take my daughter out, she thinks they are great and won't get on the back without them. I'm not to keen I prefer to feel the pillion holding on to me I keep thinking she's gone off the back unless she pulls up tight on them after any acceleration as a signal Wink

Horrible idea. When the passenger fidgets they will move you as well as the bike.
Passengers should hold on to handles fixed to the bike and should stay as still as possible. If they don't have handles to hold on to they should put their arms around you grasping their right wrist with their left hand. Their right palm should then be placed into the tank allowing them to brace themselves against it when you brake.

Rolling Eyes Laughing some people are slightly more portly than others and short arms+large belly = no way of reaching the other wrist....

This is a big no no IMO. There was an article written somewhere (Will try to find) where a pillion had his had on the tank as you describe and they unfortunately crashed, he suffered serious injuries to his hand wrist and arm because of where his hand was.

The love handle things are shit, again IMO. Get a grab rail fitted, much better for pillion and rider comfort and safety. Thumbs Up

I use them with the girlfriend but ONLY on the GSX-R. On the Panny there are enough grips anyway.

But I rate them very highly for sports bikes if you take a pillion, much better than a grab rail when combined with some non-slip seat coating. Thumbs Up!

I use the love handles for inexperienced passengers. I find them to not be constrictive at all.

I'd recommend them in those circumstances. I have a grab rail also - the handles live under my seat for when needed.

I don't buy into 'passenger safety and comfort' aspect of a grab rail. I have had a few near offs with a grab rail with myself as passenger on a spirited ride with mates. Always under acceleration where the weight of the body is having to be held back by your arms in what I call an abnormal position.

I have loops built in to my jacket which my wife holds on to,when we are in a built up area she has her hands on her knees, but when its a lively ride she holds on to the loops.

I used one for the Mrs when she used to go out on the back of the SV - that along with one of those non-slip seat covers made a big difference.

It allowed her to brace herself off me when braking, which cut out the helmet into the back of your head and gave her more confidence, which meant she was more settled, making it easier for me.

It did have a grab rail, but there wasn't enough clearance between it and the tail to fit her gloved hand in. Combine that with the fact she's had an off in the past, when a friend was showing off and she didn't have the strength to keep hold of the grab rail meant is was a good solution for us.

Been pillion on my friends CBR-RR with the love handles, and after about 500 metres I got fed up of using them... too much slack in them.

When he accelerated, you went back and the handles came with you until the slack was gone... and when braking you went forward and the handles got pushed away until the slack went.

After the first minute or two I just held onto the actual belt that went round his waist rather than the handles on the belt.

Much better as the belt was nice and tight, and so could brace myself against him when braking, and didn't feel like I was gonna go off the back when accelerating.

Would probably want someone (inexperienced) holding onto me rather than a grab handle, cos then I know they're there, but if I had an experienced rider as a pillion then probably would expect them to just hang on to something and know what they're doing

The Storm does not have grab rails so I bought me a set of them and to be honest they are a great thing to have when you get used to them. As for this bloke here:

Frost wrote:

Thats why you tell them the rules before they get on the bike. Everyone who has passed their test and taken pillion passengers know the rules.

Rule 1, Do not fidget or we will fall off and we will die.
Rule 2, Do not try and control the bike in any way, shape or form or we will fall off and we will die.
Rule 3, Do not fight against the natural lean of the bike or we will fall off and we will die.
Rule 4, You are nothing more than luggage, act like it or I will push you off and you will die.

I find if you emphasise the "you will die" comments they tend to take notice.

You I will agree with that.

Frost wrote:

Surely that is just a contradiction there? I mean if a pillion fidgeting holding onto love handles will upset the balance of the bike then surely with their arms wrapped around you would be even worse.

Hand on the tank is a big no no as Shereen has pointed out.

The lovehandles work. My nephew had never been on a bike before in his life and was informed of the above mentioned rules and spent a weekend on the back and we covered several hundred miles. I recently took Bigshits boyfriend out for a jaunt using them and again he had never been on the bike. They are far more comfortable than someone holding onto your waist or around your waist.

Besides, on a sports bike where the rider is leant forward over the bike, having arms wrapped around your waist would be pretty impossible.

One of my regular pillions uses the rear grab rail and the other holds around the waist.
The one who uses the grabrail is an experienced pillion and it's a pleasure to ride 'progressively' with them. Their head is following the road, they anticipate. Yet they've never driven or ridden on the roads.

The other one I call 'the rucksack' has ridden bikes and passed car test years ago. Won't use the grabrail. Complains it's an unnatural position. They don't hold on too tight but I'm always aware of them. No-slip pillion mat helps them.
The way I ride the bike changes. It's a more relaxed ride, using engine braking and a little more rear brake. I'm loathed to wear a cissy-belt thing but I've got one now for the longer trips. Bloody thing.

If a pillion who held onto the grabrail and then falls off the bike, well they're just a likely to wreck their hands as someone who was braced against the tank. Most inexperienced crashers (99% of us) will put their hands out to save themselves. The rest is in someone else's hands as to which bits you knacker up. Well that's what I reckon.

A good pillion on a prepped bike is a good 2nd best. I prefer city riding with a pillion....and a 2up micro-wheelie at the traffic lights is a giggle even on the 250.

My GF often holds onto a bag i wear or even unzips my pockets to hold on, she never uses the rail, she says that under power it feels like she is going to do a backflip and is unnatural. As the bike was my uncle's before me owning it, I know what she means.

Even with her being on the back and holding onto me she is an experianced pillion and i genuinely forget she is there.

I suggested some love handles to her and she said it might be worth getting some, i'm going to make my own none slip cover for the seat too soon.

If the Biatch is gonna fall off the back while we`re going down the road, the last thing I want is her dragging me off at the same time by the love handles

I use the love handles when the kids are on the back, most other pillions will use the grab handles, some don't use anything.

As opposed to the walking away scott free and uninjured that you can normally expect in a crash forceful enough to seriously injure a hand/arm ??

what bothers me with these love handles is that many people use them with the fastner to the front of the rider - so if this were to break somehow the pillion would end up down the road, i don't know why it hasn't been advised to wear the fastener to the back, so even if it did break there would be a good chance of staying on as the brace would be supported across the front of the rider.
