Your pc will naturally get slower in windows over time as it gets clogged with shit, as windows is, eventually you'll have to format to get everythign nice and smooth.
Chances are its heat, open your case, get the mass of dust out the fans ____________________ Fzr-600 1999 |

Looking at your task manager...It's chrome
10% of your CPU isnt much either...
Saying that my chrome is using 0 right now and i'm on a crappy work Dell package
It's fine, deal with it
If things are taking longer than usual to open then your HDD might be a bit derp, is it IDE or SATA?
SATA is much faster.
If you want to really splash the cash get yourself a SSD ____________________ Fzr-600 1999 |

I am not a complete n00b at computers.
I have windows search indexer disabled, always have done.
That temp folder, as has been said is wiped by ccleaner and is empty.
Only hard faults come from svchost (Dcomlauncher) between 0 and 2 a second. On the HDD part it is not using anywhere near maximum data transfer rate. It is a SATA drive.
Only one anti virus and it is all disabled unless I do a manual scan. Only thing it does by itself is realtime protection and updates.
I don't take the actual heatsink off, just the fan to expose the fins.
It isn't something obvious which is why I asked. |

If you have real-time protection, could your computer have gotten infected (unlikely cause though IMO) or (more likely IMO) have you got more than one AV running and they're conflicting at last?
On a side note I use comodo and there was a bug with that which hogged up about 40% of my CPU due to a logging error. Had to disable the logging to fix the error and then the cpu usage for cfp.exe was back down to 0%.
I don't think it is a heat/hardware issue as others have said.
If it's none of the above then have you installed any new drivers/software lately? If so try removing them, etc.
I had a similar problem once though and I could just not figure out the problem. The laptop struggled doing anything multitasking really. I tried to webcam to one person on msn, whilst doing nothing, and was getting about 2 fps (if that). I tried everything including dedicating a whole CPU core to msn and giving it highest priority, but nothing would work.
In the end I got fed up and reinstalled windows from scratch. I can now webcam on msn/skype just fine whilst watching TV on the laptop (though media centre with a TV card), browse the internet/Facebook at the same and do my college assignments (which sometimes use heavy programs like flash and photoshop) without really feeling any performance hit.
Installing is always my fall back because I like a fresh install every now and then to clear out all the crap I get from installing too much software. |
Yes I check RM. Nothing stands out. CPU usage isn't the issue.
Only one AV running.
No new software, well one thing but I removed it and it still did the same thing.
I know what you mean about the fresh install thing, I refreshed XP once a year until I got 7. It was such a major issue on XP, I am sure Microsoft sorted it out, or at least made it a hell of a lot better. When my pc is running fine, it is as fast as it was when I built it almost 3 years ago now I think.
Since making this thread, the slow thing hasn't really happened much. Only the odd occasion. When it happens, I check all the usual stuff and nothing seems to stand out, cpu/ram usage or any particular software running. |

You just reminded me I have 500mb of windows updates waiting.
I will do these and see if it works. They have been there for ages, I just never can be arsed to download them. Got decent internet connection now so should be ok. |
