having a bike delivered via courier

been looking a bit further afield for a bike and have been on shiply.com and had a few quotes which have been pretty good considering the distances.

It's just dawned on me though. what happens with regards to payment and logbook change? Is there a normal procedure with regards to payment and logbook change?

i should have said, most of the bikes i am looking at are private sellers so not so sure they would be as willing to part with the logbook as a dealer.

do paypal not charge a fee?

If the listing says paypal is ok then pay it the normal way via the listing.

If it says cash on collection ask if they'll take paypal if you split the fees.

Failing that, go there, see it and hand over cash when it is collected.
If it is a pile of shit pull out of it, better to lose a hundred quid than many hundreds with a shed of a bike.

Whatever you do, make sure the courier has vehicle in transit cover (not sure if this is what its called). I believe normal goods in transit cover won't cover any damage to a bike if it gets dropped or the courier has a smash.

Heard of at least one case of someone having a bike delivered via a shiply courier and the bike fell off the trailer. The courier didn't have the appropriate cover and refused to compensate the purchaser.

How does it actually work?

Say you go and see the bike everything is brill, you then need it transported 80 miles.

You pay someone with a van to go get it... they pick up your bike and fuck off with it?

Do they give you a deposit or something Or could you go with them? lol !

Seems kind of risky unless you know the bloke.

At least two of us off here have used a guy called Alan of shiply, me and Paddy. Both rate him highly. His name on there is SJDbiketransport I think.

He was a nice guy, had a good chat with him when he dropped my bike off and the other guy (chillyman0 off here) said he was cool at the other end. His van has a ramp so he wheels the bike in and straps it down.

With Shiply, you have to pay an auction fee so you may want to contact him personally. Other courier websites that he recommended to me when I needed something else couriered was anyvan.com and I can't remember the other one

Just try and get someone to look at the bike who is local before you part with your cash. I bought a non-runner for £100 so it didn't matter.

If not, at least get extensive photos and a video.

didnt need a courier in the end. I found one a bit more local....well less than a hundred miles away so i just took a mate on my 400 and he rode that back while i rode my new one.

seems like too much of a gamble having it delivered, unless its a dealer delivering a bike to you direct i dont think i'd bother after thinking it through

Be very careful when using "couriers" on places like shiply, whilst I'm sure there are many on there who are very good, there are also others on there of dubious character.

As has been said before ask (in writing email etc) if there insurance covers the movement of bikes, google them to try and find them independently of Shiply, if you cant find them on google be very wary.

There are quite a few Motorbike movers now operating and some can do it quite reasonably.
