It the ones marked "To whom it may concern" he should be worrying about.

Dont want to sound like a pedant but, you would be better finding a spent ak47 round as you are giving him a shell casing not the actual "bullet"
you would be better getting this
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ak-47-bullet-look-like-bottle-opener-keyring-/220962392922?pt=UK_Collectables_Breweriana_SM&hash=item3372628b5a#ht_677wt_159

removing the bullet and engraving that

Thumbs Up

Sounds to me like something that would worry him even more. Banter from the other soldiers is one thing, but nothing would put the shits up me more than a neighbour coming along and giving me a gift like that, it would drive home the very real chance of getting shot.

Why not get him a fake passport and a one way ticket to Canada instead.

Buy him better body armour the British Army give them Puffa jackets.
Kevlar FTW.

Then if he receives his 'fate laden' bullet it will, most probably, simply bounce off the kit wot you got him and land harmlessly in the dust/shit/e at his feet.
That way if he does catch 'his bullet' he can give it to his neighbour who can then take it down the local trophy shop and have it engraved.

Sorted.

Giving him the bullet with his name on it will increase his chances of having an IED put him into orbit.

This may be well intentioned, but if I had just joined the army, the thought that there was a bullet with my name on it, would not be comforting as it's a reminded of the chance of being shot.

If you are against the army, wars in general, have never liked this kid and dont mind someone putting a brick through your window, by all means go ahead

I think these days it's heavy ceramic plates as body armour ftw as they can stop rifle bullets while kevlar only stops smaller rounds.

You'd do well to remember that the squaddie may well be going off to his first tour, but his mother (who I expect will think your gift is in extremely bad taste) will be staying behind as your neighbour.

I've just thought of a twist on this shell casing/ "bullet with your name on it" idea.

Instead of the 'bullet' being with his name on it, how about him being the owner of a bullet with his enemies name on it.

Not very PC, but this one's for you "Abdul". Substitute an actual Afghan name. So you just have an Afghan name on it.

When I was a kid, a mate of mine had "The worlds most sexist racist jokebook". Despite some of my school peers fitting into the category of sexist and perhaps even a little racist, we all thought it to be awful. However, I suspect it would be right up your street Colin.

Unless you are very good friends with this lad, stay the hell out of it. If you see him, wish him luck and crack a joke about keeping his head down or something.

I think giving a "bullet with your name on it" to some random fresh-fish squaddie from down the street is a bit odd to be honest.

Confused

Well, got him an old & ancient .303 cartridge engraved up, drilled with a chain fitted to hang around his neck.

We've agreed that it'll live on his Mam's mantleplace untill he's home in about 6mths time.

Can't think why some folk would think it strange that I'd get him one/anything. He's grown up in my neighbourhood & I've watched him grow from a cheeky little runt who could barely walk into . . . well he's bigger than his dad now !

Don't you lot talk/interact with your neighbours?

I don't think you understand. I think people think its weird that you bought him a bullet with his name on it. If you were family, then you might know the kid and work out if it might be acceptable, however, you are not even a friend of the family as such.

If it were me, and I were going into a warzone, a weird middle aged bloke bringing me a bullet with my name engraved on it would be mighty creepy. Even if he did live in my neighborhood. To your credit, you didn't attempt to follow Colin's advice though.

No, there's a piece of paper saying I shouldn't.

Also, Baldrick tries to make a bullet with his own name on it in Blackadder goes forth. Blackadder takes the piss. Why? Because its a silly thing to do.

Aah ! I get it now.

You associate any grown ups relationship (non parental) with a child to be sexual in nature.

Perhaps it's best if your like leaves the fuck well alone then !

No, when I say creepy, I mean creepy as in the kryptkeeper omen of death creepy. Not Michael Jackson creepy. You were the one who added the sexual element there.

You were obviously going to do it anyway despite fairly overwhelming advice to the contrary, so why bother to post at all?
