Calling Ex-Squaddies

Young lad from 3 doors away is home on leave before his first posting to a war zone.

I'm going to get an empty bullet shell & have his name engraved on it.

I've got one that my Dad gave me, "everyone has a bullet with their name on it & this is the bullet with your name on it" etc . . .

Would it be considered bad luck to give it to him, he'd need to not lose it & I'm not sure he could manage that. Or should I just let him know & keep it on my shelf?

Sounds to me like something that would worry him even more. Banter from the other soldiers is one thing, but nothing would put the shits up me more than a neighbour coming along and giving me a gift like that, it would drive home the very real chance of getting shot.

Why not get him a fake passport and a one way ticket to Canada instead.

Then if he receives his 'fate laden' bullet it will, most probably, simply bounce off the kit wot you got him and land harmlessly in the dust/shit/e at his feet.
That way if he does catch 'his bullet' he can give it to his neighbour who can then take it down the local trophy shop and have it engraved.

This may be well intentioned, but if I had just joined the army, the thought that there was a bullet with my name on it, would not be comforting as it's a reminded of the chance of being shot.

If you are against the army, wars in general, have never liked this kid and dont mind someone putting a brick through your window, by all means go ahead

You'd do well to remember that the squaddie may well be going off to his first tour, but his mother (who I expect will think your gift is in extremely bad taste) will be staying behind as your neighbour.

I've just thought of a twist on this shell casing/ "bullet with your name on it" idea.

Instead of the 'bullet' being with his name on it, how about him being the owner of a bullet with his enemies name on it.

Not very PC, but this one's for you "Abdul". Substitute an actual Afghan name. So you just have an Afghan name on it.

Well, got him an old & ancient .303 cartridge engraved up, drilled with a chain fitted to hang around his neck.

We've agreed that it'll live on his Mam's mantleplace untill he's home in about 6mths time.

Can't think why some folk would think it strange that I'd get him one/anything. He's grown up in my neighbourhood & I've watched him grow from a cheeky little runt who could barely walk into . . . well he's bigger than his dad now !
