Got a CBR 400 NC 23 in November for a straight swap with my Bandit 600, the bike was an ex track bike but hadn’t seen much use apparently (the guy who used it for the track only took it twice before Croft stopped doing bike track days).

The Bandit I swapped still had a fuelling issue and I was after a 400 sport so was a no brainer for me personally with the guy living just down the road from me and him having an aficionado for Bandits.

Came with a bucket load of spares (loom, levers, cables even a spare tank you name it), Remus race can, crash bobbins and unrestricted CDI which was all nice.

A few before pics

LH panel was split at the top.

As for damage, fairings had suffered the most with several cracks and splits, frame and swing arm has a few scuffs and pitting which hopefully should polish out in future, exhaust looked like it could use a little sand and re-spray also the Remus can had a snapped flange bolt which needed sorting, rear brake light not working, needed rear indicators fitting etc.

Engine was and is perfectly sound despite the tatty first impression, clocks reading 44km which MOTs seem to confirm.

Bike ended up looking like this a couple of days later

Pics taken quite recently but the bike basically looked like this for the duration of November and December due to the cold and financial worries.

Me being the type to fall for good looks a no substance meant first thing on my mind was the plastics, so looked around for a decent repair kit and settled on Plastech eventually.

Ingenious solution Very Happy (Araldite and Plastech turned out pretty strong)

Missing nose cone mount, decided to improvise since side panel was going to cover anyway

Guy who lives down the street from me is a retired Millwright offered to extract the bolt, was a bit of a job remember him showing me that he had to drill the rivets and remove the inlet altogether. Cheeky git even imprinted his initials on the inlet Razz not a bad job for a bottle of Guiness

Was originally planning to respray the entire bike myself but at first relented on the fuel tank after a failed attempt on my Varadero to apply lacquer so hunted around a bit and got in touch with the head of the bodyshop at the college I used to attend, got the spare fuel tank done ford panther black for a very reasonable amount by my reckoning

https://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc425/8Moxey8/CBR%20400RR/CBR%20Respray/DSCF1559.jpg

Guy texted me after picking up the fuel tank that he would do the rest of the plastics and any further repairs needed for an amount I didn't think you could get a total respray for so jumped at the opportunity and ended up with this.

https://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc425/8Moxey8/CBR%20400RR/CBR%20Respray/DSC01564.jpg

Which led to
https://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc425/8Moxey8/CBR%20400RR/CBR%20Respray/DSC01573.jpg

https://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc425/8Moxey8/CBR%20400RR/CBR%20Respray/DSC01568.jpg

https://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc425/8Moxey8/CBR%20400RR/CBR%20Respray/DSC01572.jpg

And finally......
https://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc425/8Moxey8/CBR%20400RR/CBR%20Respray/DSCF1602.jpg

https://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc425/8Moxey8/CBR%20400RR/CBR%20Respray/DSCF1596.jpg

https://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc425/8Moxey8/CBR%20400RR/CBR%20Respray/DSCF1608.jpg

Now what didn't I do before putting all the dress back on? Check the frigging thing still ran, hadn't been started since December so expected it to be a pig but christ it just would not start all of Saturday and Sunday, eventually got it today discovered the spark was incredibly weak, swapping CDI has done the trick and fired up fine today.

Now to un-seize the clutch plates, possibly new reg/rec (current one gets way too hot after just a minute of running on idle) and find out why high beam is a killswitch (think its shorting the ignition somewhere).

Anyway most of what’s been done so far has been aesthetic just to get the bike looking presentable and running (prefer riding bikes to making them ultra shiny) will be an ongoing project and I'm open to ideas.

Oh yeah and I'll try to get some decent pics of the thing outside of the garage on a camera manufactured post 2001 Thumbs Up
