Buy my Bike before CBT (bare with me)

And then take the bike to an unused field or unused inustrial estate/car park and ride it around, -uninsured-?

Never rode a bike (powered one) in my life so would it be allowed or not?
Have to get a friend with me, dad won't know how to teach me Razz

TL;DR... Do I need insurance/cbt to go on car parks for practice

What you want to do on your bike before CBT is exactly what CBT is there for. its not a test; its BASIC TRAINING...
Idea to get a bike and go mess with it before douing basic training is a bit like the notion of giving a civvy a semi automatic riffle & a bag of granades to 'play with' .... so they have an idea of what to do before they join the army!... rather daft! Thats what the LESSON is for!

And yes; road traffic act; applies to any 'publically accessible area'

I believe it is also now against the law to own a vehicle that is uninsured unless it is declared as SORN.

Industrial estates are a definite no-no as they are the public highway.

Chris, just go do your CBT, listen to what the instructors say and do as your told. There's no point whatsoever getting bad habits before you've even done your CBT. Then come back and tell us all about it.

I'm pretty sure it's 'illegal' to have an untaxed vehicle on the road. Insurance is a separate thing purely for driving the thing around, if a bike is sat there not being ridden with no insurance on it...It's fine, just dont sit on it and start the engine.

It can even be untaxed uninsured and unregistered and sat in your garage....Pretty sure that's fine


Answer to op: It's illegal to do it, but you could probably do it and get away with it, maybe .the police are people too, as long as you arent being antisocial. loud and ripping up a car park that people are actively using, go somewhere desolate at a time when there's NO traffic around at all... There's still a risk of course, and with no insurance they very much could and probably would get you for that

But if you got caught and explained yourself you'd probably get a slap on the wrist
Or a fine
Or the bike taken off of you becuase you wont be able to get it home

You'd need someone to take it to where you want to practice in a van or something
It's more hassle than its worth.


To do the CBT on your own bike you'll still probably need ot be insured, i doubt the tutors insurance policy thing for training covers other people's bikes

My advice is: Don't bother, just do the CBT on the training school's bike (youll only drop it anyway)
It's basic training anyway, you'll be driving around a car park the same as you wanted to do anyway


Just be a brave little soldier and do the CBT, most the others there will likely be using rev and go peds anyway,

plus screw them, you paid enough for the course , noone judging you as you're an absolute NEWBIE, whereas if youve had a bit of practice you might think you're better than you really are when it comes to the training Razz

Go & do the CBT, it's nothing to worry about & you'll have the basics needed to take to the road without too much trouble. I did my CBT in a day, did a few runs around the block so I was comfortable with the bike, mirror/gear lever position etc then ventured out onto the main roads & never looked back.
If you don't get to grips with it first time round it's no big deal, go back and have some more time on the bike & you'll pick it up. Thumbs Up

Careful with that. When the RTA was amended to take into account 'private land' etc it wasn't done particularly carefully - from memory if your own private land has access to the public (which happens often because of rambling rights etc - however inappropriate they might be to the circumstance) it is technically illegal still, as someone may walk onto your land legally and therefore it's open to the public. Don't quote me verbatim on this as it's something I looked into a lot of years ago and have forgotten the finer detail of, but I'm fairly sure that's the gist.

It was recently changed that a vehicle without insurance must not have tax. The vehicle must either be taxed and insured, OR be declared SORN. Apparently to cut down the number of uninsured drivers =/

Hello, you're wrong. Welcome to the wacky world of Section 144A.

As far as use goes, it's "a person must not use a motor vehicle on a road or other public place [without 3rd party insurance". A public place is anywhere to where the public enjoy a general right of access. You'd need properly private land with no rights of way.

If Plod see you tearing around Farmer Barleymow's fields on a bike then they'll quite likely take an interest - their vision is based on movement.

tl;dr - suck it up and do your CBT.

If you could find a quiet spot that's out of the way I doubt the police would really care but first you've got to transport the bike there which might be problematic if you don't have a bike trailer.

Best thing to do really is to do the CBT and get insured.

If you really want to have a 'free go' before booking a CBT goto www.geton.co.uk.

Basically these guys work with local riding schools to gives you a free 20 mins ride so you can decide if the CBT is something you want to do.

I did this and immediately booked my CBT, few weeks later direct access.

Like really, they'll advertise some plastic octopus penis extract that makes your nose shinier but not changes in the law!

And they don't teach any law in schools at all, not even the basic stuff, you just have to figure it out and know what is 'right and wrong'

and often things that feel right are oh so wrong!

TBF, they did - a bit - and insurers have been sending out warnings of it on all their renewal documentation. If you get a new V5 or the VED reminder through the post from DVLA they include a leaflet on it, too.

a V5 at all would be a start, it's been nearly 2 months and i've still got no tax disc or V5 or log book Thumbs Down

I got a letter from them last week saying they've received my application and I should get it in the next 5 days.... better be here this week you dicks!

I hadn't seen anything on this anyway, but I dont really watch TV and haven't had my bike for long.

The T in CBT stands for TRAINING not TEST.
It's a lesson to teach people who have NEVER ridden to get to a "safe" standard to be let out on the road.

If you really need to have a go before your CBT have a look at this as mentioned above.

Though to be honest it's pointless. If you've decided you want a bike just do your CBT, it's training. I had never had a single driving lesson of any kind or ridden anything but a mountain bike several years ago and got on just fine.

If you need to go back to repeat the CBT more than twice then don't get on a bike, it's not for you

Yeah, according to my CBT instructor, the Police can now come and take a untaxed vehicle from your garage and crush it, unless you have declared it SORN.

Not entirely sure on its legitimacy however
