Basically i dont know much about surround sound/home cinema.
I basically want something that will connect to my Xbox 360 and PS3, and HD TV to provide 5.1 surround sound. My room is quite small so it doesnt need to be ridiculously powered, maybe 150w RMS or so...

How much would i be lookin to spend for such a system, and is there one that will connect to both my game consoles and tv?
Thank you

buy the one im selling. its a cambridge soundworks DT3500

https://www.anandtech.com/print/677

some details there.

has an optical input good for ps3 and most newer tvs and players. also the other usual inputs and a computery one that i used to have plugged into my soundcard.

All in all a very good system, loud but low power and never had any problems with the sound. very rarely had the volume anywhere near 50%

also comes with everything in the original box, mounts, stands, wires, cables etc.

looking for £40. pm me if interested Thumbs Up

Bear in mind it wont be surround sound if you have all the speakers in front of you. Mr. Green

Get ones with good mounts and poles, so you can position them around your gaming seat accordingly

Otherwise do what I do

Wear headphones Thumbs Up

A decent sound system is 1000x better than decent headphones. I understand there are good ones but nothing compares to having a nice system.

Have to agree with this point.

I spent about £50 on a 5.1 surround sound system for my computer, about 8 years ago, and I still use it today.

It's still miles better than the £50 headphones I bought 2-3 years ago regardless of the fact I made sure the ones I was buying were good. The money wasn't wasted though, I bought those for the guitar amp so that I can still play at night Thumbs Up

Depends.
Not true, Headphones offer 3D surround sound that's unparalleled to placing speakers around the room at various acoustic lengths.

May not be important if you just want to play music...in which case why bother getting surround sound Mr. Green

But for games, it's very important, I need to know if someones shooting from back left back right and be able to pinpoint them immediately

For music sure, a good sound system for the win.

Get yourself a woofer, makes all the difference

One thing that pissed me off about 5.1s and made me downgrade to 2's was the mass of wires, just so so many wires, alreayd got enough wires with my shit as is thanks!

You didn't have it set up properly then.

When I had my 5.1 set up properly, playing games was awesome for the exact reason you said they failed.

Only times I want something on my head or over/in my ears is if I am travelling somewhere and want to listen to music.

But 5.1 is real 3D sound; the speakers are actually all around you. You should be able to tell where they were coming from as if they were actually there in the room with you.

I still choose my 5.1 over headphones though. The only time I would choose to wear headphones is when I can't play my music out-loud for some reason. I'm currently listening to music through my laptop rather than the headphones, which are within arms reach.

Anyway, I used to play COD 4 just fine on one of these bad boys, using the in-built speakers.

surround sound is good for atmospherics, but for exact location of sounds when playing a first person shooter, it has to be headphones

a decent amp and speakers is the ideal choice, and old amps can be had for a lot less than when new, as people now want a new amp that can carry hdmi video rather than just phono or svhs

however, an all in one box set up is gonna be pretty good and less bulky

I've got both. The proper amp and speakers gives better quality sound and richer sounds, but the all in one set up is still surprisingly good for what it is.
