Hi Guys,

I've been riding on a CBT for nearly a year now and I'm thinking about doing my A2 test so that I can upgrade to something bigger. I've been reading a lot about needing a 125cc bike capable of 100kmh (62.5mph). What I really want to know is will my current bike (a Suzuki RV125 VanVan) be suitable for this? I can get about 57-8mph out of it but I'm a pretty big bloke (17.5 stone and 6'5") so obviously I'm affecting it's power to weight ratio somewhat and also acting as a serious wind block (especially with my armoured jacket on!)

So what I need to know is do they take the bikes top speed as what it would be capable of with an average sized rider on it or are they interested in what I can do on it?

Also, can anybody point me in the direction of a decent list of bikes under 33bhp and/or bikes that are good to restrict? I've looked all over the internet but I'm having no luck.

I'm about to go home from work now but look forward to seeing any answers you may have in the morning (I'm just saying that so you don't think I'm rude if I fail to respond to any of your replies).

Well your bike should be fine for the test as its over 120cc and below 125cc and should be capable (with a lighter rider) of 100Kph.

As for the list of the of 33BHP, Babyam has listed quite a few Here, Also I can highly recommend a 500cc bike like the Kawasaki GPZ500S or Honda CB500 restricted to 33BHP, there good fun and economical and can be de-restricted at the end of the term into a full power bike.
I have compiled a 500cc FAQ, the link to it is in my signature.

HTH

Craig.

The bike will be fine.

They don't do a speed test on the bikes before the test, as long as it is a 125cc motorbike you'll be fine.

They dont speed test bikes, on my test i was taken on a perfectly straight section of rode with a 60 limit where i was expected to keep pace with the traffic.

They wont take you onto dual carraigeway so a 60 limit is the most you will need to conform to. hence there is no point at all to takign the test on a bike capable of greater than 60 mph.

Because you took your CBT with an approved instructor.

You take the A2 test with a test centre with an examiner, not an instructor. You may be able to borrow one of your instructors bikes though.

the DSA examiners dont have bikes, however you can use bike from a training school. but you will have to pay for the hire of the bike etc.

And to do an A2 the bike has to be 120-125cc and capable of 62.5mph

doing a CBT on a 100cc will get you an A1 liecence

If you go on a dual carriageway and only go along at say 55mph (if wind is against you), will this not count against you?

Yes it would if the traffic isn't all going at 55mph, they'd wonder why you were choosing to cause delays.

I think if you do a DAS they like to take you on dual carraigeways. On an A2 because the bike is so underpowerd (very few learner legal bikes arn't! Razz) they keep you off them as your reduced power and speed mean that you cant really show off how good you are on them.

If top speed is really such a concern for you, just change the back sprocket for one with a few less teeth on. I tried this, i went from a 45 to a 39. put my top speed up from 70 to 90ish. However it took an age to get up to speed and made slow riding near impossible

A2 test -- Some examiners do take you out on dual carriage ways, but the speed limit is not always 60mph, its 40 or 50mph most of the time.

We ALWAYS take our students on the A1 as it is often part of the test route in Grantham..
