I was just wondering what people's partners thought of them and their love of bikes?
My girlfriend really dislikes them and has given me, in the past, the 'It's them or me ultimatum'. In a way it's understandable as her cousin is recovering out in the States from a bad accident where he hit a van head on. He may never walk again. Crying or Very sad
Trouble is she won't come out on the bike as a pillion to experience it for herself as she finds helmets too claustrophobic.
She's let up a bit as she knows that me riding to work everyday gives me an extra free hour to spend with her!! Very Happy
How do others find their loved ones react?

My girlfriend was unimpressed... mose scared for me which is nice i guess...
At theme parks she wont go anything, even the kids rides she goes green...

Its taken 2 years of me owning a bike to convince her to even go on it, she was terrorfied to even sit on it before, for the past 3/4months she has been going anywhere and everywhere with me, in fact she gets grumpy if i dont pick her up on the bike and get us a lift (been off the road the last few weeks a couple of times)..

Life is so much easyer now i can take us places, she loves going on it too, even hopeing to take us on holliday sometime soon Smile

I and alot of others hear are single, which would suggest that ownign a bike is a little off putting to the opposite sex Laughing

Some people just have a dislike of bikes, one which cannot be alterd. A few people at work constantly try to get me to ditcht he bike for the car and tell me how bikes are amazingly dangerous and how all bikers are loons etc.

I think that the trick is to get something sturdy looking, comfortable with big hand holds. the tiny seat on the back of a sportsbike, with nothing to hold onto, isnt exactly inviting to someone scared of bikes Razz

hehe you can't quite say that's why she doesn't like bikes, because i refuse to go on anything at theme parks either, and even kids rides make me feel ill, but I do own a zx6r!

On the other hand I might just be weird... I think that's quite possible Laughing

My gf doesn't mine me having one. She used to tell me she'd never go pillion on one not cause of me, but cause of other road users, but she has agreed now, that when I pass my test, she'll try it.

I seem to have infected karen with the biking bug, so there's no problem there!

Although I have to say, if I got the 'me or the bike' ultimatum off anyone then I would be saying goodbye to them as I got my lid & leathers on....

Wotcha.

I used to get folks telling me that too.
Just politely point out how dangerous beds are. Yep, that's right - beds. Those things you go to sleep in.
It's a fact that more folks die in bed than anywhere else. . . . . yet almost every night you climb into a potential death-trap. By comparison, motorcycles are safe.
The best thing you can do, is constantly try to get the folks you work with ditch their dangerous beds, and spend the night on a motorcycle.

Works for me Mr. Green

Well as Mcjam pointed out, bikes are certainly no issue in our relationship. If anything, the fact that we don't get out on them together more often is an issue!

I decided to get a bike after a few rides as pillion on the Ninja and it's gone from there really.

The fact that we both like leather is a bonus! Wink Laughing

Hmmm, well being single at the moment I can't really comment, however my last girlfriend hated me having the bike and wouldn't come on the back of it, she promptly went of course Wink.

There is also another group of people that worry, parents...I can tell you my mum wasn't happy when at 16 I decided to buy a scooter when my uncle was in hospital after crashing one badly, but she has come to terms with me own bikes now and says she prefers I wouldn't ride but she says herself she can't stop me.
Though my dad is pretty happy that he doesn't have to ferry me about anymore Laughing.

CraigZZR,

Interesting that your parents are okay about it. Mine were a little worried when I first mentioned bikes. Now they're fine.
My 85yr old Gran wants to ride pillion with me now!! That's keen! Laughing

No other half should ever give you an ultimatum over a hobby/interest (unless its picking up prostitutes etc. Laughing ).

My other half doesn't mind, she hasn't been on it though said she would. She does worry about me on it sometimes same as my parents. However apart from my mother no one has ever said I'm not allowed to get a bike (26 years of age and my mam was telling me I wasn't allowed to get a bike. Laughing - she didn't know I'd owned a bike for over a year by that point. Laughing ).

IMO if your other halfs giving you that kind of ultimatum then the relationship is doomed anyway. Why bother trying to change somebody that dramatically find someone new i reckon.

I was already riding bikes when i met Cath, she wasn't,but now she's got a bigger bike than me,d'oh Very Happy

Apart from commuting, I get about 25% of my biking to meself, the rest is 2-up with Jazza. We've done about 4K miles on it this year and now she's seriously considering doing her DAS next year and getting her own.

Now my daughter's got over her phobia of the thing, I've got both of em nagging me to take 'em out now. The plus point is that no spotty scrote with a ped is going to impress her now... Mr. Green

My Girlfriend likes the fact I have a bike, even though it is only a moped, she can't wait for me to pass my test next year and get a big bike, she can't wait to get on the back of it. She wants to tour the UK in August. Shocked

Thumbs Up
