Was just walking home, looked up just in time to see an orange flame going across the sky.

Was going fairly fast and leaving a trail, was visible for about 5 seconds and slowly fizzled out, no sound at all.

Was it a meteor or has a space station just blown up?

Saw the exact same thing walking back from the shop. Comet or shooting star I'm guessing, was cool as fuck!

No, not a lantern, I saw that too. It was with a green tail at first. With my job you see lots of shit in the air, but this one was different. Thought it was a meteor at first but it was moving too slow.
It was awesome!!!

Where you based Dilyan?

I saw it in stoke-on-trent and like you say, much too quick to be something like a chinese lantern but too slow to be a comet.

I believe it took Salford out, few survivors and rumours of plants that walk in Cheshire.

Meteor speed: 11km/s
Earth orbit: 6.9km/s

So something burning up from low orbit would look like a meteor going at half speed. Meteors are mostly iron, where as stuff we launch is made out of lighter materials like aluminium, zinc, lithium, and contains batteries and all sorts of other chemicals. So given its brightness, and slow speed I'd guess it was some space junk burning up.

Other possibility would be a missile test.
