Hey all,

Over the last few days I have been unable to open any Word Documents.

Double click on a doc, a box appears saying 'click-2-run configuration failure', then another box appears saying 'there was a problem sending the command to the program'

Ideas?

Right click -> open with?
Or right click -> properties then pick what it opens with?
Open word then go File -> open and pick the file?

Open word from the start menu, then use the "File -> Open" dialogue box to navigate to your word document and try to open it.

If my thoughts are correct then either:
- Word will fail to open
- Word will open and the document will open successfully too

If word fails to open:
Google the specific issue to find a specific fix. If you can't find one then it may be worth saving the hassle and re-installing it.

Word opens and the document opens too:
Could be a few issues. Either a registry error in how the document it being sent to the program, or it's not opening with the right program.
Try, as Frost says, manually choosing word to open the file with from the "Open With" menu.

Post back here with any results. Thumbs Up

Why?

OpenOffice (now called LibreOffice) is a pretty good product in my experience, if it solves Shereens' problem what's the big deal?

It's got a new name? Maybe it's better now then.
I didn't like it because it couldn't wait to save everything as it's own filetype, wasn't compatible with later versions of word and was generally much worse than it should be.

I'm sorry. Are you talking about open office or MS word here? Every statement you've made there could apply equally to either. With one exception. Last time I looked, openoffice could open word documents but word couldn't open openoffice documents.

Now there's a strange thing eh? Because openoffice is open source so the necessary information to allow the MS word developers to include this file format is out there for them to take advantage of any time they want. Sour grapes much micros*ft?

Open office. But I see your point, and yeah that must be what I meant. The only time i bothered using open office was to write a CV and it left it so full of formatting errors and problems when I got it into a format I could use in word I ended up having to chop out all the text and reformat the whole thing Thumbs Down

I prefer Office portable though.
Can run it off a data stick (albeit a bit slow as its a big exe)
Best versions of word etc. (2003, 2007)
Isn't a little bitch like open office Thumbs Up

Ok, so I can open a word doc, if I open through word.

I can also open the doc if I use the 'open with' method.

Still cannot open by double click or right click open.

Maybe the file association is screwed up.

What version of Windows are you running?

Right click the document.

Properties.

Where it says "Opens With" click the Change button.

Browse to Word... should be C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE10...have a quick look.

Choose that program and click Apply.

It's always had the ability (as has MS Office) to change the default file type to save as

, wasn't compatible with later versions of word
Older versions of Word also can't open Word documents from the future without installing a conversion filter

and was generally much worse than it should be.

Seems like windows has got the wrong default program for the file. Do open with again, clock Choose program.. at the bottom, (or right click the file > propeties > change)
Tick "always use this program to open this file type"
If that fails check program access and defaults (control panel)

If that doesnt work then your shits derped up, reinstall word.
I'd be surprised if you didn't try the first thing i said though...pretty basic stuff here

It was a docx to begin with, that's why you struggled to open it, windows didn't set the association for the new filetype. makes sense.

Open it and save as.. change filtype in the drop down to .doc

Oh ok my bad, the reason I queried this is because before I was having problems, the doc icon was a word icon, the icon is now a docx icon and looks completely different.

Thanks for all you help Thumbs Up Karma
