Whilst riding this morning I noticed oil coming from the offside fork seal, not gushing out but a trickle and enough to run down the fork stansion. Bike now tucked up at home and will obviously need sorting. Im going to dig out the Haynes manual shortly, but as a guide,is this a DIY job or mechanic? and if so what price am I looking at? The bike is 1998 CBR 600 F

Its a DIY job really if you have the patience and the tools.

Not overly hard, I followed a Haynes for my first set of forks, which were upside down ones!

First though, pop the dust covers off and run something thin and flexible up between the fork and the seal, e.g. a piece of stiff plastic or a feeler gauge. Hataz gonna hate, but this sorted my leaky seal, and it's still bone dry 8 months or so later.

Well the costs you need to look at:

Aftermarket fork and dust seals - Anywhere between £25-40. I've used Nikone seals and so have my friends, they seem to last well and be good quality. OEM seals are expensive but some say they are the only ones you should use, up to you really.

Fork oil - Synthetic is £7-10 per 500ml and mineral is 5-8 per 500ml

When I first changed my seals it took me 6 hours but I'm sure after you've done it once it'll take you no more than 2-3.
