I will be after a KTM 690 SMC soon, and noticed my local KTM dealer (M&S Motorcycles) have the 2012 model in. Do you have to be a certain age for a test ride? Still haven't decided if I'm buying new (£7,195MRRP), or nearly new (£4-5.5K) yet so will be dropping a decent amount on this bike and I want to make sure it's worth it.

If worse comes to the worst you could go to a private seller, and whilst I suppose it's a bit of a nobbish thing to do - just test ride it with no intention of buying it.

Most privste sellers would probably be fine providing you give them either the full cash amount / deposit / something valuable, heck even some petrol money Laughing

Just insure it and then cancell your insurance within 2 weeks and you should get every penny back. (On most insurance companies I think it works like this, obviously check Razz )

Job done Thumbs Up

Pretty sure what you're talking about is a European Law or something. Cool down period of two weeks.

I used it with an misplaced order, full refund (minus postage from my end).

Don't quote me though.

I'm thinking it'd be like rental cars, 24+. I might just pop in one day and ask. Quite leaning towards buying it new, but I think I should be able to knock them down on the price a bit, or get some extras surely?

Depends on the dealer.

Most places will let you, there is just a higher excess.

Friend of mine test rode a BMW S1000RR at 19. Just had the restriction removed from his license and there were no problems.

Thats just unfair I think... it's the same on my car policy...

If me, my dad or my mum crash my car, we gotta pay £350 voluntary excess.
If my sister crashes, she has to pay £350 voluntary plus £150 compulsory.

Not sure how it should make any difference really, a crash is a crash no matter who caused it.

Having just got my licence back in October I thought I was quite lucky that my Honda dealer let me have a test ride on my CBF-600.

I rolled up on my old Varadero 125 and all they asked was that I left the keys to the Varadero with them while I took the bike out for a spin.

My age may have been a factor, as I was 28 at the time.

The only way you're gonna find out is to ask the dealer, probably best to walkin, show some serious interest and then ask.
