Just thought I should do 'the proper thing' and introduce myself.

I've just returned to biking after a 23 year absence and got myself a 1983 Honda CB125TDC.

Not been on the road on a bike since my old 1986 Suzuki RG125 Gamma (I miss you girl Crying or Very sad ) and like a prat, I never took my test when I had the chance all them years ago.

So, here I am with permanent learner status as I doubt very much I can afford to pay the required money for lessons and then test. But never say never Very Happy You just don't know what's around the corner do you?

That well paid job may materialise instead of this crummy, low paid one I have.

Well, anything else you need to know just ask. I hope while I'm here you all make me feel welcome (sure you will) and I will try my best to fit in without upsetting too many of you or sending you to sleep with my waffling on (it's my age you know Mr. Green )

Permanent L plates because you wont be able to afford lessons?

Dont be silly.

CBT every 2 years = £100 every 2 years.

Theory, mod 1 and 2 combined cost = £121.50 as a one off providing you pass first time.

Makes sense to get your test done and you can do it on your 125.

Thumbs Up

Hi, welcome to BCF Thumbs Up .

+1 to the above though.

There will soon be a ridiculous amount of hoop jumping for a rider getting licenced. Get your tests done as soon as possible.

It does; IF you can afford a bike; you can afford a licence; and you dont HAVE to do a £1000 Intensive DAS course, and until January next year you still have chance to test on a tiddler and get a full (if 2 year restricted to 33bhp) licence for the effort.

As for CBT... worth the money, if only as a refresher, and 23 years ago... 1989? It wasn't around, so probably not even done then.

Meanwhile, CHANCE that if he did early CBT, circa 1990, and still has the cert it could still be valid; very early ones aren't time bound, I'm told!

Alternative is IF he applied for his provisional licence before 1990 and asked for motorcycle entitlement; it would have had two year validity, BUT if he passed car test within two years, on return (& providing any subsequent DVLA cock-ups haven't deleted it), would have been awarded indefinitely, and need not be validated by CBT.

Oh NO! NOT another Super-Dreamer! Clean the oil strainer, before you kill it! click button at bottom of post to view my profile; links to blogs of two Super-Dream restorations in the last two years, and some handy How2's, on cleaning oil strainers and stuff to stop them siezing!

MEanwhile check your licence entitlement; you MIGHT have to do and repeat CBT if you intend perpetually L-Plating, but thats stupid, especially as you can use the Super-Dream to get a full licence this year, ahead of new punative test laws, and do it quite cheaply.

*shakes lefty awake*

Helloooooooo ... are you still in there, or have you just lost the will to live?

If you've survived the trial by fire that is Teffo's advice (and understood and assimilated it), then well done, you may still survive BCF.

There's no reason to sit on a CBT! Do it now, before they change the rules again. I learnt to ride at 23 in NZ, buzzed around for a bit on a 250cc, then came over here and didn't ride again until I was nearly 40, sat on a CBT for 3 years before taking my test (12 years ago now) ... and now I act like a (rather creaky) 17 year old.

Cool Thumbs Up

I'm still here (been at work), no amount of flamin will put me off Wink

I got my licence in 1986, passed my car test in 1988 and therefore have the permanent motorcycle provisional entitlement. DVLA have confirmed to me that a CBT is not needed.

As I've already stated, until my luck changes jobwise, I won't be able to afford the luxury of going in for my test. Sad

Another CB rider you say? Well, it was cheap and runs and I just SO wanted to get back on the road. I would have preferred a Suzuki GS125 (dunno why) but I couldn't find one for sale.

I will be tidying the CB up over the following months as she is looking a bit tired.

Although the brakes work they are a little weak so I have bought some new pads and shoes and will be replacing them this weekend all being well.

Chain and sprocket kit is in the post, hopefully that will arrive in time to do all 3 jobs together.

The rear axle nut is worn so I will replace this at the same time if the local bike shops have one in stock.

I've heard/read about them not having an actual replaceable oil filter and that probably explains why there is no side stand on the bike. One of the previous owners probably removed it in order to remove any chance of oil starvation to the head.

Those who don't know, the 'filter' is a piece of gauze in the right hand side of the engine. If put on the side stand with the engine running, oil starvation can occur due to the oil naturally gathering on the left hand side of the engine, making the oil pump run dry.

I should imagine this rarely gets cleaned due to the hassle of having to strip down the right hand side of the crankcase to get to the 'filter' in order to clean it.

I'll look up your tutorials and advice at a later date as I will be off to bed very soon.

Thanks for your welcomes Very Happy

Heads up for you; January 19th Next year, new test rules come into force: if you test on a 125 you will only get an A1 group M/C licence restricting you to a 125... just without L's.

Tests for a full licence will be split; and you will have to do DAS style testing, on probably a 500 for an A2 45bhp restricted licence. Or as you are over 24, the full DAS straight onto a big bike, over 595cc.

In sort; it gonna be EXPENSIVE.

Theory/Hazard, Mod 1 & Mod 2, as said cost £121.50. You will probably have spent half that on brake shoes, C&S kit & oil, very soon... it's not an inordinate sum, even if you dont take paid for training & just 'go for it'...

And finding money in the short term, can save you hundreds in the long, to have to get a licence via DAS.

Unfortunately; I blame the O/H... She wanted a 'project' and decided to pick one of THE most pig awkward bludy ones to do! Ended up with seven of the ruddy things! So built one up along side hers for 'Monkey-See-Monkey-Do'.... only three or four more to 'do' to clear the decks! Shocked

Doing a DT175MX though at the moment as 'Super-Dream' anti-dote!

Ey up. What they all said: you don't need lessons, you just need to find £121.50 and some time to pass the tests.

You can book them all yourself via www.direct.gov.uk, and there's nothing particularly hard in any of them - although the Theory hazard perception is a bit rubbish.

Thanks for the heads up on the changes in law.

I've just had a phone call from a mate who says they need a new driver where he works and has put my name forward for it, gave them my details and my capabilities. Said they seem interested and will get in touch. Who knows? things may be changing for the good. The wages are certainly a big improvement on what I already get.

I did my first CBT in 1990. It was time limited to 3 years, but the three years didn't start until '96 (if memory serves, could have been '98). So essentially I had 6 years + 3 years = 9 years of CBT freedom... Thumbs Up
