Hi all,

You may have seen the odd post from me elsewhere about my bike.

Basically, I bought it as a restoration project, so I had an idea of how to fix bikes. It's *nearly* there (motions tiny amount with fingers).

However, there is a dreaded electrical (i think) issue.

Basically, we changed the ignition (as the key for the old one was missing) and it doesn't seem to do anything. The bike starts since we changed the points, but you only have to kick-start it, no need for the ignition to be on. Consequently, the ignition won't turn it off either, so you have to stall the bike to stop it, which is a pain (although it get's your rodeo skills up to scratch round the garden!).

The bike also appears to be blowing the fuse - although the bulbs appear to still be fine and all. Could it be the issue with the ignition which is causing the fuse to blow?

I should point out that I fucked up when looking at the earth on the main frame. I unscrewed it to clean it and check it was alright. After that, I was bolting it back on and either I had a Hulk moment of super strength (unlikely) or the bolt was made of silver cheese (more likely) and the head snapped off. We moved the main earth to the other side of the bike - would this cause a problem do you reckon?

The bike is a CG125-K1 (1978), and on 6V electrical system. I have changed ignition coil as well, and all the wires seem fine (no black strands etc - i think the loom was replaced not so long ago).

Tl;dr - changed ignition, doesn't affect bikes on and off - need to stall to stop. Also keeps blowing fuses - have moved position of main-frame earth due to personal fecklessness, could this be a problem?

Cheers,

db

How many wires does the ignition switch have?

I'd have guessed one should be (A) 12v in (b) 12v out (for horn, indicators etc) (c) Coil in (D) earth

In the on position, A should be connected to B

In the off position, C should be connected to D

Random point, but on my Honda cm200 the indicator relay had 3 prongs but only two of them were to be connected up, I wondered why the third one was off and reconnected it. It then proceeded to blow ever fuse I put into it lol

Probably not it but thought it was worth a punt

To those of you who are just itching to know (don't deny it, ~I can feel the anticipation), and to save making another thread) - 95% of the issues are sorted!

Unwrapped the wiring loom and it turns out that the black/white ignition wire and the earth had become disconnected whilst I was wrapping the insulation tape around the loom last summer. I can safely say that the key now turns the engine off, and that the engine cannot be started without the key in - which is a relief!

Furthermore, the fuse isn't blowing anymore (touch wood) and the indicators and brake light are all working fine (getting stronger with higher revs, god bless 6v systems!).

All that's left to do is to get the head-light and tail-light working - I have a feeling there may be more dodgy connections and wires involved.

Cheers to all who helped out, and hope to see you on the roads in the next few weeks!!
