PostPosted: 12:23 - 08 Mar 2012    Post subject: Declare all mods? Reply with quote

hi, been ringing round to get a quote for my thundercat and some palces, such as aviva, won't insure it because it has more than 3 mods.
So this got me thinking, I could dynojet, full race exhaust and do something else (alright I don't know how to tune a bike XD)
And its the same cost as changing mirrors, indicators and a seat cowl.
How can this be right? Do you guys ignore smaller mods such as mirrors indicators? I thought you were suppose to tell of all mods to be safe you weren't going to get screwed if you crashed?

My t'cat has the following mods, which would you disclose?
Slip on exhaust
One piece fairings on the front
LED shotgun style tail light
Braided lines
Mirrors
Indicators
Screen
Custom paint
Restrictors
Brembo rear master cylinder
My mate thinks it has a quick throttle? (no there isn't a throttle restriction, its carbed)
Also got a seat cowl and custom undertray with tail tidy to go on

thanks, Grant

Disclose all of it.

Unfortunately back in the days of good old underwriting it would be easy, because the UW would just discard half of that list no bother and the price would be the price. Nowadays, in the age of fecking price comparison websites and online quotes, COMPUTER SAYS NOOOOOOO

Restrictors aren't classed as a modification, IIRC.

Cheers,
Steve.

These are not Performance Enhancing mods so I would just declare the can.
(Though they do not load for cans.)

One concern for insurers is that you will expect to be paid out for all that tat. Where they cannot get reliable RPI they will default to FAIL.

Take all the shite off.

Re-quote.

Get cover.

Put all the shite on.

(I was only kidding about taking it all off of course. But they will not know)

This is why my last insurers was good, they would allow me to do anything to my bike because they said they would only replace as standard, so brilliant because all the extras were cheap anyway.
However, they don't want to insurer under 25's on sports bikes anymore Sad

I've never declared any mods on my insurance.

Last time I tried to tell them I had crash bungs fitted I couldn't get a quote so haven't bothered since.

I won't claim for them anyway, and basically if your bike gets nicked they just don't cover them which is fair enough.

If i didnt declare any modifications and I crashed, could they refuse to pay out whether or not one of the mods was related to causing the crash or not? I.e. say if the cable for the LED tail light worked itself loose and resulted in me getting shunted, would I be screwed?

They'll butt fuck you regardless of whether it was an item that caused it or not.

When I hit a car in the Supra, they tried to not pay out as I had a respray and alloys Laughing

Why do you want Insurance cover?

To be paid out in the event of an accident/RTA?
Or just so you are covered to legally ride on Public Roads?

Consider.

Me personally with over 20k of bike in the shed I insure to ride. I do not intend to fall off.

Well you have to be careful, red is obviously the fastest an colors can change the perspective of what you are thinking bit too much to go into on here.

One piece fairings, what's that then.

A bike usually has one fairing, how many have you got?

no you fool, on the t'cat, the front is usually split into the following:
Nose, V-panel, 2 airbox covers, 2 side panels
Mine is just the Nose and the rest is joined

Yes and all those panels make a fairing, not fairings.

Bikes have one fairing made up of panels, etc

So you find it difficult to understand the meaning of one piece fairing? You're either being a pedant or you're a bit daft. Either way you deserve a slightly patronising pat on the head Wink
