Hi chaps.

I've recently bought a FZR600. It had been standing for 18 months. While its been regularly turned over I think there has been more than enough chance its had stale petrol in it.

I was wondering what the easyest ways are to clean a carb, starting from least obtrusive (mechanically) to having to remove and strip the carb.

I've heard of an additive that can be added to the petrol to clean the carbs etc..... what is it?

I've also heard of a carb cleaning spray that can be sprayed into the carbs, what is it?

Then I guess the last resort is to remove the carbs and hand them into a bike garage for a strip and clean?

I ask this as while the bike is ok at low revs occasionally it idles a little high or low, plus I think the mixture may be a little rich as any choke at all kills the engine. I guess that suggest my air filters are full of muck?

Thanks in advance.

I use brake and clutch cleaner for mine, aerosol and it it evaporates. Compressed air is good for cleaning jets, but I don't have a compressor, aerosol works fine though. It's a good idea to give the exterior of the carb a good clean, then just spray inside the bits you can see, obviously if you want to clean all the jets you will need to take it all apart Smile However you may have to replace some o-rings/gaskets if you do that.

Redex is the stuff you add to the fuel to clean the carbs, not as affective as stripping it all down though.

Yamaha sell a carb cleaner that is used by draining the carbs, pulling off the fuel line & pouring the cleaner into the carbs. let it sit over night & then drain em again in the morning. Some people say it's the dogs bollocks but I've not used it....I usually strip & clean em

Where i used to work in a garage they had all the "wurth" areosols... Carburettor cleaner and Brake cleaner. They are really good too. They are pretty much the same stuff, but the Brake cleaner is a bit stronger and has a jet nozzel rather than a mist spray. I use the carb cleaner on my scooter alot because its got an exposed K&N and dust and shit can get through the mesh on the filter.
Just dont get it on your paint work, it dosent do it any good... Shocked
Good luck!

Ben

Forte gas treatment

excellent stuff really cleans through the shit, helps as a general additive to improving response and making acceleration smooth.

It is not available from halfords or the like has to be purchased from a
car dealer main franchise or proffesional outfit..

similar to redex but industrial strength, thats some really good shit mannn Exclamation

1 half a bottle in a full tank over 2 tanks will help a lot Thumbs Up

Hey retro man, so essentially that stuff is flushing the gunk out through the cylinders?

Sounds alright tho, think I'll be looking around for some of that.

first it cleans the inside of the tank in which it sits, then it flushs through the pipes and any pumps fitted clearing shit all the way,

strips the carb of any petrol deposits and other shit,

on entering the engine it cleans deposits off the valve seats and piston heads before going through the exhaust..

even at this point it has not finished if engine has a cat fitted the it clears carbon deposits off the lamba sensor.

all this means that the engine and fuel system are cleaned right back to an almost as new condition.

it also helps lubricate (very Finely) the internal workings of the carb.

all the best
