Does an empty hard drive weight the same as a full hard drive?

Does data weigh anything?

Stole this

Quote:
There was an interesting discussion about this exact question some months ago; a critical definition must be made of what exactly constitutes 'empty' and 'full'.

If I define 'empty' as 'devoid of information' (i.e. all bits set to '0'), and 'full' as 'maximum information' (which would be a random string of 1's and 0's), then because there is a difference in entropy, there is a difference in total energy, and thus a difference in mass. The entropy per bit is kT ln(2), and from that you can calculate the change in mass.

If you have a different defintion of 'empty' and 'full', you may get a different result.

And we need to understand that "mass" and "weight" aren't the same thing.

Does a 1 weigh less than a 0? If we think of it as cards either face up or face down we see they weigh the same but can still be used for binary calculations.

its only a change in the magnetic property's of the disk
nothing is added or removed so mass or weight will be the same

My hard drive is full of 0's and 1's as it has data on it. If I emptied the drive, i.e formatted it all those 1's and 0's would remain there, but the File Allocation Table (FAT) would just forget where everything is.
So the difference between a full and empty drive might be almost no magnetic difference at all. Like asking if a book weighs less just because you've forgotten how to read.

A drive of 0's vs a drive of 1's is the most extreme case you can compare and would never occur. Event then the mass would be indistinguishable in difference. Weight on the other hand might be effected by the interaction between the magnetic field of the drive and the local area. This would probably be unmeasurable small unless the magnetic field it was in was very strong..

That is what I alluded to, I am so used to talking to children I naturally break things down into simplistic metaphors. Mr. Green

Is a hard drive actually filled with 0's and 1's, or does it comprise of bits that are either on, or off?

Folded arms

But a ton of 0's would weigh less than a ton of 1's.

They are, after all, of no value ... whereas 1's, by virtue of their numerical loading, are going to be heavier Dance!

Flash memory does, I'm not so sure about magnetic hard drives though.

0 = off
1 = on
The disc is just split into little parts than can be magnetised to either polarity.
When the disc is new i don't know if they are all magnetised one way, or the other, or just left at default which has a programming equivalent of 'null'

As I understand it the difference between a '0' and a '1' is in the position of sub-atomic particles as opposed to their number, so in that respect the weight will be the same.
