the English up in Scotland?

I'm considering applying for the Police up there, but a few people have said it might be worth thinking about that side of it.

If it was an office job or something, I wouldn't think twice about not going, bound to get a bit of banter (same the other way would I would think). But the Police aren't liked by a lot of people as it is.

Anyone done it before? They are sadly the only place that are recruiting at the moment, and I'm fed up in life at the moment and feel this is what I need to do.

Dont be an arsehole and you'll be fine.
I've noticed the further north you go, the more chilled out and "less bullshit" people are.

Thats what I was thinking/hoping, guessing places like Glasgow on a Saturday night, will get the piss taken.

Know what you mean about understanding them! Hell, trying to say some of the places is hard enough...hence why I'm thinking of Fife or Grampian, and not Strathclyde!

I have a Luton accent.
I've spent alot of time in Scotland, Glasgow and surrounding areas, as most of my family are there.
I've never had any trouble, if anything people are overly friendly to try and compensate for the bad rep that floats about.

I think the CNC (Civil Nuclear Constabulary) are recruiting in Cumbria and somewhere near Scotland at the moment if I recall correctly? Take a look. You are a sworn Constable but instead of dealing with assholes on a Friday/Saturday night you stand outside a nuclear power plant all day every day with an MP5/G36c in your hands and a Glock 17 on your waist.

That way if any 'natives' do give you same hassle, you can deal with it in a decent manner. Laughing!

In my experience this is wrong. I have trouble understanding people from Glasgow, but the further north you go, the softer the accent is.

As a Scot that has lived in Scotland, England and Wales I would offer this definition:

English 'arseholes' are given less tollerance than the home grown variety in Scotland and Wales

Welsh 'arseholes' are universally taken the piss out of more in Scotland and England than they are in Wales

Scots 'arseholes' generally get drunk and start fights in the House of Commons!

.......so, don't be an arsehole and you can go where you like and the subject should then only come up during the 6 Nations, Euro 2012, World cup and of course the vexxed question about whether Andy Murray is Scottish, English or Spanish!

The only other thing to take into account is that all aresholes hate the Police so beware of point 3 above!

How long is ham?

Rural, especially Highlands and Islands you're fine, there's a lot of White Settlers anyway. Urban, there'll always be some neds and mentals who think that Braveheart was a documentary who'll use it as an excuse to kick off, but the uniform will do that anyway.

You'll be very, very lucky to get recruited as a proper copper though, unless you can tick a diversity box. I'm not sure that talk'n a bit funny loik is going to do it.

Yes, for the posh types on the top level of benefits. The rest of us made do with Primark. Wink

I'm a scouser by birth, and I lived and worked in Dumfries & Galloway, (Eaglesfield, for iMark's benefit), for 18 years before moving to Cyprus.
Other than a couple of isolated incidents, drunk chavs, I never experienced any hatred, towards myself.
Sure you'll get plenty of banter, just give as good as you get and don't take it personally.
In fact the only real hassle I ever got was from a tosser from Cumberland, who bought the farm that surrounded my house, a total fukkin' fruit loop.
Just don't get involved in the Rangers/Celtic bullshit and you'll be fine.
If I had to move back to the UK I'd go back to Scotland, without thinking about it.

Football doesn't interest me.. but yeah if there is a match on between Rangers and Celtic, stay away from colours if you're in town or going to the pub.

@MarJay Never really been north of Glasgow myself so yeah going from Dumfries to Glasgow is gets stronger, then gets weaker as you head off furhter north towards Inverness then? Razz hehe

If you go for a larger population (or any part of the central belt), you are more likely to come up against the nationalist "braveheart" mentality. That said, when wearing that uniform, any person on the receiving end is likely to focus on something that makes you different and your accent will likely stand out. It's not necessarily personal, just a focus for their resentment of being pulled.

As Rogerborg says, there are a significant population of white settlers in the Highlands and Islands - if you go into a wee shop, you are odds on to be served by an English accent, but if you join the plod you will be put into the busier areas first off until you earn your stripes, which is where you will encounter more neds (non-educated delinquents) so you are unlikely to be able to avoid it.

Also bear in mind, you will be taught Scots law, therefore you will have to retrain if you want to move back south in a few years.

If you end up in Glasgow or the western central belt, you will not be able to avoid the football issue. From a 5 year old "what team do you support?" "I dont follow football" "if you did, what team would you support?" "I dont know enough about it" "Well, what school did you go to?"

I'm from england 6 miles from the border, yet this is enough to make me a 'Typical english cunt' To the population of cardiff. The valley boys and people from swansea seem to be the biggest english haters.

I grew up in Wrexham (our chavs were called "scallies") and having been born in Chester I was English scum, just like you (despite playing by their rules, learning Welsh in school etc Rolling Eyes ). No idea why Wrexham folk had such a chip on their shoulder but they were ferociously Welsh, which I thought odd because you could see England from about the 3rd floor of any building. Maybe that's why. Once you get beyond about Llangollen everyone seems much more comfortable with their Welshness and gets on with life rather than seething over the fact that England is allowed to keep existing.

I live in the North East of Scotland, my job means I meet nice people and junkies, neds and drunks, the only time Ive been insulted tends to be when a little spoilt brat I work with gets on his Braveheart trip with me, we can not stand each other and to be fair i have been known to give him a hard time too. I told my area manager the only reason I hadnt killed the irritating shit with an ice pick through the head is because I would probably get a warning letter Confused

Cant say Ive noticed what the armament of the police academy is these days but I do know that you are more likely to end up on a long, wet and windy foot patrol round Dounrey at the arse end of Jockland than getting onto the cumbria site these days. 12 hour shifts to scoot about in a van/focus ect and generally think you are awesome sounds v easy to be honest!
