Hello,

I've decided to get my Yamaha Diversion back on the road for spring. Currently it's sitting in my parking lot with the following problems:

SORN'd
MOT-less
road-tax-less
insurance-less.

Can any wise folk on here let me know the correct order for getting it road-legal again? Bureaucratic idiocy means, for instance, that I can't tax it until I have MOT'd it (even though I'm law abiding and would never ride without road tax!). sigh.

I'm guessing the correct order is as follows:

First: Insurance

Second: MOT (I believe I can ride it to a garage for testing, even though I have no road tax or MOT)

Third: Road tax (which presumably cancels the SORN automatically).

Any comments? Have I missed anything?

Hi
You've got the order right Thumbs Up
Don't forget to pre book your mot first though. That way you should keep any plod happy with what you are doing .If the mot is within pushing distance you might be better of doing that Very Happy

Edit:sorn will cancel when you tax the bike

I was told by my insurance company I couldn't ride the bike to a garage to get the MOT renewed as lack of MOT invalidates insurance. Rolling Eyes

Does it say that in your policy (the printed one that they gave to you), though?

I thought the general consensus for this kind of thing was that as soon as you had the policy you were insured and the insurer can't say "you're insured to do this, but you can't do this because your insurance will be invalid" because it violated some RTA. I don't think there was any case law about it though so it is all uncertainty.

If you have a van/trailer, you could use that. I would ride it there however.

From the https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_069671

Quote:
Driving an untaxed vehicle to an MOT test

You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station as long as you have adequate insurance cover.

This also applies to vehicles being driven to and from a pre-arranged test at:

a Vehicle Inspection Check (VIC) test station
an approved weight testing station and reduced pollution test station

You MAY ride to the MOT centre; lack of MOt cert does not automatically invalidate insurance.
However; the MOT has to be pre-booked by registration, so if you get stopped it can be verified, and you are supposed to go by the shortest 'reasonable' route....

Which is of course an utterly ridiculous position for them to take, and should be treated with the contempt that it deserves.

There is a tale of a group of football fans from Vattersay (an island off the west coast of Scotland with no MoT facilities), who when travelling to Europe for a tournament, needed to get their bus MoT'd when they reached the mainland. The booked it in in Dover. Very Happy
