Finally decided what bike I'm getting next! It won't be until next month though, when the DRZ will be sold etc. What I have been thinking about is buying the new 2012 version. It is rather sexy, although some tell me it's a bit naff, but I love the orange:

My heart is set on a 690, so don't need to hear anything about YZF's or Husky's. The big issue with this is, dealers want £7,195 Shocked The addition of the 2012 model is 690cc engine vs. 654cc, so a few more horsies, more orange bits and probably other stuff but I've yet to come across an actual review. While I can afford it without finance, I'm still not sure it's a smart choice. The other solution to my want, nigh, need of the bike is to get a 2011 model. It must be white though, as it's the fastest colour obviously. I want the bike to be pretty near mint so if I go second hand it'd need to be under 1000 miles.

I've never had experience with a dealer before, so maybe it would be possible to get discount on the 2012 model? The only parts for the bike I'd want at the minute would be bash guard (plastic one), Akrapovic exhaust (end can, front pipe costs over £500 alone) and maybe sliders.

Advice and opinions please? Thumbs Up Smile

In my experience with dealers if you go in there and say that you want this particularl bike and are a little blunt about it you can normally get things thrown in for free. Mind you a dealer round where I live is selling a 2011 white one with 70 miles on the clock for a little over £5k so you may be able to bag a new "old" SMC?

It is a lot of cash for a bike but how long do you intend to keep it for? You already have experience riding supermotos so thats not an issue and KTM build quality is pretty damm good. If you like the bike (and it is gorgeous, if I had that kind of cash I would buy one too!) go for it.

I think the 2012 also gets a bump up to 6000 mile service intervals - in a couple of years may have to see if I can find the guts of the newer model to slot in to my 08 model.

Not sure how long I'd keep it for, depends really. I would defo prefer a 2011 model if it's 2 grand cheaper I reckon! Just need to find out what the dealers have to say, and hopefully get a test ride as well. This bike should be more flexible than the DRZ, especially for long distance riding. I'd guess at least 2 years.

Is it not just the Duke engine? Slightly longer bore or something. Apparently it's gained a few KG in the process, but like I said finding an actual review on this bike is impossible for some reason. Even walk arounds on YouTube are rare so I've just got the KTM specs list and owners manual to go off.

I've been looking for a decent SMC with low miles since January but my budget is reall about 5k but hell if you've got 7k to blow then get with the smc-r or buy a 2011 and kit it out with powerparts

I spent ages bartering with dealer and finally bought my 2011 new in september for £6200 with an akra pipe, a set of goggles, and the first service free, i'm still happy with my choice.

I remember considering a 2010 cat C repaired for £4,400, but decided to go new because i wanted to run the bike in myself, i wanted to know exactly what the history was, i wanted warranty, and i desperately wanted a KTM Pen Rolling Eyes.

If the right second hand SMC had come along, i probably would have bought it, but it didn't, and i'm impatient.

I prefer my black frame and white plastics, but wouldn't mind the engine from the SMCR

That's a good price. If I could get the exhaust and service for free then I'd pay £7,195 but if not, then I'll go for an older model.

What "techniques" did you us to barter with the dealer?

Those KTM pens are pretty difficult to come by Wink

Dealer had just moved premisis so i soon figured he was wanting all the sales he could get, time of year was in my favour and hypnosis helped a treat Wink. I made an offer of 6k for a standard bike, fornight later we finally agreed on the aformentioned. i think he just wanted rid of me by the end Laughing

Determine the lowest price they will accept on a standard bike, then tell them you'll pay just a fraction over that for a bike with a couple of extras, keep adding them on one at a time. grind them down little by little Black Eye

I wouldn't buy new this time of year tho. late autumn is best i recon. Thumbs Up

Well I didn't plan on looking into getting one this soon but I've started looking and so far so bad, pretty much none on ebay and I can only find used ones at daft prices on ad trader. The 2012 model is the only one that pops up really, still at it's £7,195 price tag. I think I'll pop into the dealer tomorrow and see if they've got anything. Hopefully I have enough self control to not enquire about the new model.

Thing is, I took my DRZ off roading the other day and had loads of fun, even in SM trim and I thought.. hmm yeah, I wouldn't want to do this a 7 grand bike, if I dropped it I'd cry even though in the mud it'd only get a few scratches. I suppose I'll just have to be patient, got plenty of time anyway.

That thing is on my wish list... Almost spent (i think just over 4k) for a 58 plate few months back, but as i didn't have a job decided to put the money in a bank account for future rent bills. (Damm my sensibleness)

Such a sexy bike... Had a little go on one and its hell lot more fun than DRZ.. only did couple of miles but you can really fall in love the engine and seating position.

Shame the only ones that are on the market are the 12plates... Seems like everyone buys it and then holds on to it for few years... Sad

EDIT: You can pick up the older ex-demo's for around 6k... When I was looking in September/oct there were quite a few at decent prices. Still think the 12plate is a little overpriced (£7000 - with negotiation and maybe an exhaust) Very Happy

Seen that one, and another in Wales. Would prefer a cleaner and newer one tbh and seems to have been owned by half the forum. Never thought it would be this hard to find them for sale second hand. Back to the drawing board maybe, meh Confused Maybe I should just upgrade my DRZ (carb, exhaust etc.) and wait until Winter for cheaper 2012 models to pop up.

G... Your a bad person.

The insurance just ran out on the XJR... I've got an offer of 1300 for it from a friend. Could happily sell it.

And I could just afford that. haha. I really do need to keep hold of that cash, student living isn't cheap and there is no guarantee of a decent paying job in 3months time!

If only though. Neutral

Crying or Very sad
