in my opinion the R6 is well ahead of the srad in terms of handling, it needs to be ridden hard though to get the best from it.

But is possibly one of the best handling bikes of it's era, if possible go for a 2002 R6 if you want a carb'd version, as the 2nd gear issue was primarily sorted by then.

2nd gear problems? Are these common on a 2000 r6?

That looks a nice clean bike mate. There is a major service at 24,000 miles which includes valves being checked which is quite pricey. Maybe ask if this was done as it has 25,000 on the clock.

They do have manual choke and 2nd gear problems can be common up untill 2002 I think. Depends on how its been ridden previously. Is easy to check for the problem though.

They have a choke. You need to look at around 05 onwards for auto choke sportsbikes.
Gearbox problems are on all 5eb r6s, but if the gearbox isnt fucked when you get it, then it probably wont unless you hammer it from 1st to 2nd all the time.

Give it whopper toes in first then change to second. If it misses or falls out (and you're sure it isn't your poor changing) then it has the "2nd gear issue"

Thumbs Up

The gearbox was recalled but did not affect 2002 models, 2003 on was fuel injected, no choke

Same for mine.

Phil, it affected all 5EB and 5MT bikes. 2002 is not exempt.

According to VOSA, Yamaha did a recall due to transmission seizure on 1999 models.

2nd gear issues I've never come across in 2001 or 2002 bikes that I have rode, even high mileage examples, but that's just personal experience.

The second gear issue affected all the bikes up to 03 where they went fuel injected and sorted it.

It was a common yammy thing at the time due to the design they used for the dogs. It affected the thundercats, fazers, r6's, r1's and probably some more.

Just hammer it in second gear, if it jumps out then its fucked, if not then you should be good.

Yes they have a manual choke.

On a side note, I bought my 2004 Daytona 600 with 12k miles for £2150 which is not much more than you're looking to spend.
