Both my wife & my youngest daughter ride their own bikes, but I've found it's much more of a hobby for theem, for want of a better word.

On a really nice summer sunday they might get their bikes out, but then they might go 3 months without being touched unless I go and take them out.

Without stereo typing too much, I would say the majority of ladies who ride do not get as deeply involved as men. I can (could) spend a whole day wandering round the various GW's shops at Swindon. My missus would be say 'lets go' after half an hour.

I suspect that maybe the case for many women in society who do get involved to an extent (but we are not all the same), and if that is what your wife and daughter get out of biking, then there is nothing wrong with it.
I also suspect that even if in the minority, the few women who do the whole biking thing as much as any man, may as I have seen from a couple of replies here, be seen as trying too hard to make it in a man's world, and be showing off.
Although I've risked being accused and shot down for trying to stir things here, I have enjoyed reading the replies folks (so thanks for letting a newbie have a say).........and some of the banter is fab. Thumbs Up

A perfect example that we are not all the same.
I have to admit I know very little about how to fix problems on a bike, as I'm still reasonable new to the whole biking thing. I did in the past have an interest with cars (I suppose that is a bad word on this forum?) back in the days they used to have carbs and points, etc. However, that interest faded as I got older.
Who knows, maybe I'll actually get round to working out how to fix the fairings on my bike one day. Wink

To be Fair, PB, I think that is probably something that is AS true of most men riders, isn't it?

Far more have bikes as Sunny-Dunday toys, than are ride till you die, never a cage till teh coffin, rider... self included in that!

I'm inclined to diagree with the generality; There are different 'types' of biker, men and women, spanning a wide range of possible interests within the persuit.

Thirty years ago, my mother commented in debate about 'women drivers' that men, could be good, or bad, or any degree of indifference between; where women tended to either be very good, or very bad.... andit was EASIER to be very bad, than very good.

I think that there is more than a grain of truth in that idea; women can throw an enormouse amount of pasion and enthusiasm into something, if they have the interest. Doesn't matter whether its decorating the house; making a cake, raising a child, or buying a pair of shoes.... if they deem it 'important' then they will as often as not give it all they have got. If they DONT think it 'important' or its something they dont like, or they have no interest in, then they struggle to find any enthusiasm at all.

Men, are curiousely more capriciouse in this; and when they show enthusiasm for something, it can often only be 'skin deep'.

Of the lady-bikers I know.... I think that this comes through:

There are 'some' to whome it is no more than indulging thier fella; He rides; so they sit the bunny, go to the rallies, and 'tolerate' it best they can, rather than sit at home like a wall-flower.

Some, never get off the bunny..... but, enthusiasm discovered; put more into 'biking' than thier bloke.

YOU KNOW the girls I am talking about! Grass-Roots Competition would NOT happen if not for them. Rallies would not happen or have toilets!

They are the un-sung Biker-Hero's the 'good-old-lady' who may have NEVER ridden a bike themselves thier entire life, but who get stuck in, do the organisation, get thier hands dirty and make 'stuff' happen.

Others, and here we step into your; "Whats source for the Gander" Girls; who decide that riding bitch looking at a Shoei sticker REALLY isn't much fun, having thier leg patted at every traffic lights; WHY cant they be up front? Are a different kettle of fish.

Some; again, do it just to have a go; or to prove they can; and will do thier CBT and get a 125, to get thier licence on; and once done; the challenge met; it is merely 'something' they can do, and its all packed away in the garage along with the sugar-craft kit and the Ski's from the last challnges they had a crack at.

Others; though do follow the pasion; they 'Do-DAS' and set out to 'prove' they can hack it with the big-boys... sorry ScotsLass.... but it IS the sterio-type.... and HAVE to have a ZX6R, they lads all say will kill them, just to prove that they are wrong... OR they want the biggest baddest 'Chopper' they can get thier hands on... (ooo-err-missus!)

Many of these girls 'devotion' to the persuit IS 'fleeting', and lasts two, three seasons? But that is actually NOT a lot different to many blokes, who'se interest, is often no longer.

BUT: I know a number of ladies who have got into bikes without ANY male influence; sometimes often possitively DISCOURAGED from biking, and done it off thier own batt.

One memorable one was mother of an aunt; who had a Honda Melody Moped. Pampered little missus in the 1980's had her own little 'wim-lib-wibble' very, very quietly... she got a part time job at the library, MUCH to her hubbies annoyance... "Becouse I'm Bored!" She then saw a moped in a shop window while aiting for a bus... so she read up about them... Hubby refused to teach her to drive... she was 'useless' aparently... so she bought this moped... and kept it at a neighbours, until she was brave enough to tell him she had it.... which was after she had passed her motorbike test!

There was another, similarly when Snowie did her CBT; she saw an ad for a 'Get-On' course and just decided it 'looked fun'. Her hubby told her she was 'Daft' but she came bag all enthusiastic deturmined to do her CBT; She was telling us when the Instructor was writing out thier Certs, that her Hubby now owed her a Scooter; becouse he'd bet her one, she couldn't do it! And she was loving every moment.

I think that its probably more women are 'transient' in thier interests, and more women riders, probably do have shorter riding careers; and they probably DO put a lot more passion into it, when they do.... which may highlight the idea they are 'trying too hard'... but?

Well, Women can be a real POWERHOUSE, and I dont think it does much harm for them to challenge the blokes from time to time, and make us take note of them......

And I HAVE to say... while this thread MAY have been started about women RIDERS.....

There are more women BIKERS, who have never ridden a bike, and without whome, SO MUCH of the persuit just wouldn't happen...

Organising Events
Providing St Johns Ambulance
Shuffling the forms at 'sign in'
Handing out race numbers;
Directing people to camping pitches
Making sure there are cups of tea and bacon butties
Making sure there are toilets
And CLEANING THE FUCK UP AFTER US

To all THOSE women, the unsung, forgotten supporters...

For THIER involvement in the persuit....

The Rallies I have been to

The Races I have attended

The Competitions I have taken part in...

THANK-YOU

Odd thread...

At the risk of being slaughtered by all sides, here is my sweeping (and therefore inherently innacurate) generalisation on the matter:

Men and women are wired differently. Us men are basically kids masquerading in larger bodies, whereas women are our mothers.

Men therefore like to play with toys, and women like to play a little bit then ask us to tidy up whilst they get on with all the things that have to be done for the household to function. This is why men get 'more into' bikes than women.

Men tend to ride faster because we have less of a sense of self-preservation and hate to see somebody else being the alpha. Women however have more sense and probably less fun as a result.

Most women look better than most men in leather - they are curvy and have soft bits plus they smell feminine (fap fap fap fap fap....)

Thank you.

I know only 1 biker girl and talking to her is like talking to a bloke. Not feminine at all. And leathers don't make her more attractive and a fact she rides 750cc cruiser doesn't make her more interesting in my eyes. I cannot say I like or dislike her.. she doesn't bother me much except she seems to be a bit odd, man like.

Biking is a province of men imho and girls/women look a bit out of place here. But I have nothing against them riding motorcycles. Everybody can do what he likes. Some men do ballet for example.

Of my bunch of good friends, quite a few are women, who ride bikes. Some are even calender girl sexy, most are just normal looking women. They ride passably, are not a danger and cruise along on the rideouts with the blokes who just cruise along. A couple of them are (were) proper fast. My protoge was one of the fastest of the fast bunch. Trouble was, that when she was in the lead bunch I, and most of the other lads, would psycologically back off, we didnt want to see her go down the road.
Now, no sterotypes here, but she met her match when a car pulled out on her (totally NOT her fault, slowish speed in a village), but the sight of her bleeding and broken was a bit too much for all of us. Broken bloke, goes with the territory, mashed up women..... Not good for the male psychi.

Hey. You cannot say that sort of thing Sir.
Menstruating, child birth and breast feeding is a woman's province.
Being a galoot is a man's.
If a women wants to do then no man should stand in her way or judge her any differently than he would a man.
I mostly encounter that sort of thinking by the Twats of Religion.

What you are 'accustomed to' does not mean it is 'as it should be'.

My other half had pretty much zero interests in bikes until she met me.

She started with the I am not getting on that, then quickly realized that if she doesn't we would be spending alot of time apart Laughing so she finally gave in and went pillion and much to her (and mine) surprise she really enjoyed it

She just recently did her free geton taster session and will soon be doing her CBT followed by her full license Thumbs Up

Ah'd hit that... Shifty

Oh, no argument there, bang tidy, I'm just wondering what Issues we're discussing here.

For those playing along at home:

Pic on the first page is "Alex and Annas Ninja 6Rs pic0179.jpg", which can also be found here, which leads to this Flickr page for alextgirl aka _ScotsLass_ and "alextgirl" is another account on Flickr with aforementioned "Ah'd hit that" imagery including "AlexTgirl winning Miss TG Scotland 2004." Ding, 'gratz.

Do I win an Internets? Wink

... Wait what?
