im riding to work at the moment with my mountain bike and i use big knobbly mountain bike tyres.

My question is would it make a difference using road tyres? and would this potentially help me shorten journy time slighly?

as wthere would be less resistance of the road

Shorten your journey time? maybe slightly it will make it much easier and nicer to ride though.

Riding faster will shorten your journey time. Road tyres will make you more efficient and therefore, potentially faster. It's like the difference between rolling a 10p and a 20p coin.

On the road, the narrower, higher pressure and less knobbly your tyres the easier it is to pedal. However with narrow high pressure tyres you will also feel the bumps more. If you have suspension on the bike that makes it more difficult too.

Something about 1.75" wide and pretty smooth should be a good compromise between ride quality and pedalling effort.

I've seen and b4 wanted these tyres, wide with grooves but look like they roll good.

Afaik with them, rolling and a freerolling would be significantly more ' productive '.

How far is commute and what roads ?

commute is about 7- 7-.5 miles roughly

I use a mix of quiet 30 mile an hour road going out of town which to be honest are shit i tend to use the pavement as its smoother and no one is on it in the morning.

then i hit a single lane carriageway where there is a bike lane path which is nice and smooth but its 2 miles long and has a tiny incline.

the last bit of my journey is just re entering a town than into the manufacturing plant

atm it takes me about 40 minutes to complete this commute which i think is quite a long time to be honest!

If they're not pedaling any faster the difference in speed is down to their gearing, not the tyre width and tread pattern. Mountain bikes are geared low for, y'know, riding up and down mountains. Roadbikes are geared higher. If it gets to a point where you're in 21st and you can't pedal any faster, change your sprockets.

https://www.wiggle.co.uk/continental-travel-contact-city-mtb-tyre-and-tube-set/

I've used these now for nearly two years without getting any punctures despite broken glass frequently being ridden through (broken glass bottles on the tow path Rolling Eyes). They're much easier to pedal than MTB tyres.

I'd definitely go with road tyres, get the pressure up to 65psi+, and if you've got adjustable suspension, stiffen it as much as possible.

Eventually though I just gave up on my MTB and went to a hybrid, but even that's heavier and less efficient than it could be.

taking that rear shock out and replacing it with a solid tube will help too,
I went from a mountain bike on road tyres to a hybrid roar bike with 700c wheels and couldn't believe the differance in speed and how much effort it was to pedal the old mtb,
I sold the mtb for £70 and got this https://www.hawkcycles.co.uk/VIKING-URBAN-TRAIL-24-SPEED-3-3-product-39.html
for £199 just after xmas
totally differnt to ride

my tyre it says 26" x 2.1. all i can find when i type this on net is mountain bike tyres

does the 2.1 relate to the width of the tyre?

if so does that mean i cant fit anything else or i cud fit these:

I popped some schwalbe city jet 1.5" tyres on my mtb, look around and you can get them for £10 a pop.

not sure if that was aimed at me or not.. soo
with my mtb I could just about get 15mph along the road to work (on my top quailty £8 halfords speedo)
with the road bike I can easily cruise along at 15mph (same speedo) but if I want to go faster I can easily get up to around 22-24 and well over moped speeds on a slight downhill.
mtb was 21 speed and the road bike is 24 and much higher geared but as I have had several ops on my knee I take it fairly easy and dont even get into top gear before around 18mph lol..
..
or put another way my Collie could beat me on my mtb but she cant get near on the road bike Laughing

Road tyres all day long if you're on roads or smooth tracks. Made the world of difference to me on my 7 mile commute. Used to find it such a chore lugging big heavy nobblies up the road. If you want to really fly along comfortably trade the bike in for a roadbike with 23-25mm tyres, the difference is like night and day. Just picked up a new road bike last week and can comfortably do 19 - 20mph average over the distance and I've only been cycling to work for 4 months so still really just building my core fitness.
