Fucking Windows number 8.

Touch screen is an old crappy tech, I wish people would stop lapping it up as though it's something new and fantastic, because it's really not Thumbs Up

The first OS I paid money for was Windows 7. Brilliant. Looks like I a not going to spend money on the 8th edition.

At this point I would usually be championing Linux as a wondrous alternative. But the unity user interface has made it shit. Gnome 3 is also crap. I'm really not a fan of this mac style hide all the UI stuff.

Thankfully the front end graphics and back end OS are very seperate allowing you to stick whatever GUI you want on there. There's one called KDE you might be interested in:

I detest windows. I had a new laptop arrive today and quickly installed Mint along side it. The only reason I use Windows is for Vensim and because of iTunes. If I didn't have an iPhone that would be one less reason to use it. Windows is utter shite.

Was windows 98 good?

As for iTunes, it's per evil. Though i am disappointed at the lack of android - linux integration.

Similarly 95's "shit" reputation was earned by the trauma of it's initial release. By the time of OSR2 the problems had been resolved, although they never got USB to work, but by then it was time for the release of 98.

If it wasn't posted repeatedly, it wouldn't be a meme, it would be an image macro.

I hated Gnome-shell at first too, but I find it's not so bad nowadays. Just about to switch my main PC (currently running Ubuntu 11.10) to Debian Testing. Just for giggles.

Try going via Mint 12 first.

7 is good, 8 looks to be unnecessary, touch screen is rubbish.

Ok... The thread title is crap, should be
"How users without a touchscreen will use Windows 8"

The metro scheme is pants for those without Touchscreen, we all know that.
But in its defence, it is an awesome GUI for those who do have touchscreen. A brand new interface that works very well, while looking pretty snazzy.

Remember this is just a preview. In the final release you will be able to disable Metro.

Ignoring the new GUI for a while, Win8 has some major operational code changes like the way Windows will handle SSDs has changed, previous releases of Windows have all been geared towards HDDs.

It is a shame that the Preview doesnt auto-disable Metro for non-touchscreen installs...... If it did there would be far less people moaning about it and I would lay money down on M$ having that feature on the final release.
Its obvious they wanted to show off the new GUI to the masses but forcing it upon them isnt a good idea.

I played with the Dev Preview a while back, I disabled the metro gui. I am very impressed with the extra functionality it gives to the user.
Check out the new task manager. Its had a full overhaul.
I know its only a small thing, but its an improvement all the same.

Thumbs Up

I feel a little dirty, but well said CaNsA.

The problem really is fear of change... I remember the days when the start menu was the main bone of contention. And when you had to go to 'my computer' rather than c:\ but all similar changes are now accepted (people have even stopped complaining about ribbon!). MS are in a difficult situation, on one hand every one complains because they never innovate, on the other people complain as soon as they alter anything.

I've been using win 8 since the dev preview and have found it incredibly usable, once you get over the initial shock you'll soon come to terms with the metro interface.

Oh, and I'm no MS fanboy, I have a dual boot mac/win and a cloud Ubuntu server as my normal machines.
