 |
|
Hi All,
Just a quicky, as I know there are some techy people wondering around BCF.
I'm helping a friend out, they're after a 24 or 48 port managed switch, doesn't need to be Gigabit, but Gig uplinks would be nice.
I'm used to working on expensive stuff where a single switch might be £10k+, but he's after something in the £200-400 price bracket, and i'm not that used to the gear in this range!
I know D-Link, HP, Netgear and co do these, but has anyone used them? I was thinking of recommending something that'd support SNMP, SSH/Telnet CLI, Multiple VLAN support etc.
Short of that, It wouldn't really need anything else other than the ability to reliably switch packets
Anyway, any suggestions are appreciated.
Cheers

Getting on a bit now, but I've been using a clutch of these for years:

Having worked and currently work with... Cisco is my best vote.
Not overly difficult to manage... I mean an office of 30 of us manages 2500+ schools |

Just had a look at these and think i'll point him that way;
https://www.cisco.com/cisco/web/solutions/small_business/products/routers_switches/200_series_switches/index.html-tab-Models
dujawkz, they were after something new with a warranty/po papertrail and all, otherwise i'd have said that off the bat.
Agreed Paddy, I work pretty much with Cisco in my main job. I've used most the other big makes (extreme, foundry, f10 etc) but have found Cisco to be about the best.
I've been playing with the Nexus stuff a bit recently and that does some really cool stuff (the 7K can support 16,000 VLANs and splits into 4 switching domains, all with seperate configs). I'm an R&D monkey for a telecom/datacentre company so i get to play with the bigger stuff, but the flip side of it is I dont really see LAN/Desktop side stuff, and I thought recommending 3750s to connect a few mostly idle desktops was ott! ____________________ Current Bikes: Honda CBR 600RR - '07, Suzuki GSX1250 FA ST '11

We use various HP ProCurves, about ~50 devices in total ranging from the 1800 series up to 5400 series for core switching.
The 2510 would be a good unit if you only need 10/100 to the desk, they have a couple of 1Gb ports for uplinks as well. They are a solid layer2 switch, they also have a life-time warranty |
