Particularly at East Midlands, anyone done it? I know some airports offer free parking for bikes and since I'm only going for a couple of days it could save me a small fortune instead of taking the car.

Dunno about east midlands, but I parked overnight at Stansted once, when flying up to Glasgow for the weekend, it was okay.

Got to be careful where/how you park, though: in case of being boxed in by someone else, though. Bloody tricky to manoeuvre yourself out of a space that someone has flown off to fuck-knows-where, and left you squished in behind their bike Laughing

This site (updated 08) says there is no free parking for bikes at East Midlands.

Your best bet is find someone who lives close to the airport who will store their bike for a small fee and a few beers. It'll work out cheaper than paying the extortionate airport parking fee's and you might even get yourself a lift to and from the airport.

I'm going away for two days at the end of the month, flying out of Gatwick.

I hadn't thought about going down on the Motorbike but this thread made me think about it so I just checked their website. It's free but there are no anchor points.

What do you guys reckon? Would you risk it?

  • Bike would be left there from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon.
  • Car park is multi-storey, presume it's reasonably well lit they have security but probably doesn't mean much.
  • Bike is a 2010 Versys 650, yellow, if that makes much difference.

Thoughts?

I've parked my bike for long weekends in Gatwick. IIRC there's no MC bays - you just tuck it away in a corner somewhere. Take a lock and an alarmed disc lock and hope for the best.

Parked at Gatwick many times, it's fine. You can park it under the up ramps and it's FREE. Loads of Police/security/cameras around there anyway, just pick your spot Thumbs Up

Stanstead is less Secure than Gatwick and I've never had an issue there either and I left my bike there for over 2 weeks. Wink

Oh really, no bays at all? Gatwick's own website explicitly states that you must park in bays and that any bikes park other than in designated bays will be removed.

Could it be a recent development? When was the last time you guys parked there?

My biggest issue with biking anywhere for onward travel (airport, train station etc.) would be what to do with helmet/jacket/gloves/boots. What do you guys do?

I've got a huge topbox (removable, obviously) so will put that on and store the helmet and gloves in there.

I prob won't wear boots, will just wear whatever I'm taking abroad. And I don't actually have bike-specific jackets and trousers (shock, horror) so will just wear stuff for the flight.

It was about a year ago, so yes, they may have designated bays now. Used to be under the ramps. But that was when all that construction was going on, so that makes sense.

Old Thread Alert!
