Hi there

one thing I dont understand and need a sensible explanation.

Bf is about to do his module 2, got his bike already, so once he gets the licence he's gonna be straight on the road. He bought an older GSXR 600, just for curiosity looked up insurance quotes not long ago, just roughly, and if he, as a new biker, with no NCDs, insures only himself on the bike, it's around 50quid less then if he insures me on it as well. I've got a CBR600RR, 2 years NCD, 2 years licence, surely it should be less or not?

Is it because I'm female and they might be thinking girls are worse bikers? I'm not saying they are!!! If he adds me to his car insurance, completely different story, I knocked off couple of hundreds quid (i'm bit older and 'sensible' driver Laughing )'

So what am I missing??

I don't think there's any kind of logic to insurance quotes. I'm just glad motorbike quotes are somewhat affordable to me.

It was more expensive to put my Dad on my first years bike insurance than it was to not have him on it:

Me:
17
no driving experience
no riding experience (other than CBT)
no NCB

Dad:
40s
Driving since 17/18
Riding on and off since 17
Over 15 years NCB for a car
No NCB for a bike (because they expired)
Drives a HGV for a living
1 claim in his car due to bad weather (about 3 years ago, protected ncb)

Go figure.

From their point of view:

One rider, used to the bike, they can't spend that long riding it every week.

Two riders, you might not be used to it and therefore be a higher risk, AND with two riders it is quite possible that the bike will do more miles in a year.

The reason it's not a lower is because insurance companies weight the quotes.

Think of it as being done like this, when you try a quote with you and your boyfriend on, it could be seen like this:

Quote for BF: £1000
Quote for you: £100

90% of BF's quote: £900
10% of your quote: £10

Final quote: £910. They take 90% of your BF's quote due to his experience. When he is as experienced as you it may well be 50/50. Think of it like this or even as just averaging the two quotes.

More often than not, putting someone else and more experienced on the policy will not affect the price at all because insurance companies calculate the cost of insurance based upon the highest risk. That would be your boyfriend.

They started doing this as a deterrent to 'fronting', where people would put themselves at 17 as the nth driver so the insurance quote was a fraction of what it would have been with them doing a solo quote. Now it doesn't make a difference so no point is doing it.

Hmmm, good point there, cheers for the info. Tho I'm still bit confused why is it possible with the car and not the bike. Well, I guess I check my insurance and see if I can ride other bikes as first party as I'm not actually sure. For him, it might be but trickier as I had trouble insuring my bike (due to the RR bit I guess) until I had at least 1 NCB and 1 year licence.
But cheers guys;)

You should be fine. I think its standard on most policies now. I'm 18 and they've given it to me Razz.

Hi Dom

yeah, I think I should, I did before, but dont remember if I do now, different insurance company. So I'll be fine when it comes to his bike, and from his point of view, who would like to ride a flowery bike anyway??? Laughing

In the end, insurance is a gamble for both parties.

Different insurance companies use different method to "work out the odds" that there will be a claim and price the premium appropriately.

Different companies will use different data in different ways to do so.

It may well be that statically a second rider on a bike is more likely to increase likelihood of a claim while a second driver in a car in the same circumstances is more likely to reduce the chances.

Hmmm, maybe. We will see tomorrow (hopefully) once he will be doing his quote, this time prepared to buy. As my guess is it's going to be yet again different to last time when he wasn't an owner yet of the bike.
Thanks all.

And yup, spelling seems to by an issue in this topic, blame the phone I was replying from, or maybe I was thinking MEAT, but actually meant MEANT!!! Laughing

So yup, bf is officially a biker. So insurance needed as bike is waiting to be abused.

Looking at the quotes it is a similar scenario as me last year trying to insure myself on 600 RR just before I had 1NCD and 1 year licence, i had 2 weeks to go only tho. He's got nothing, fresh licence, and GSXR SuperSport. So we're trying to cut the price as much as we can. But not much security on it. What do you usually select in the 'security windows?' As some of the comparison websites give you selection like 'Oxford disc lock'. Does that really make a difference or not on a old bike and should I not even bother looking it up for a 1300 quid worth bike?

Any ideas how to knock the price down are welcomed Thumbs Up

The best I could ever get discounted with security is ~£50.

Personally, I think it's not worth declaring security. That way if that one time you don't lock the bike up and it gets nicked, they can't wriggle out of it. Of course you'll still secure it though.

Maybe worth declaring an alarm - but I wouldn't declare a chain/disk lock I don't think.

Hell of a first bike though, that is. Shocked The biggest thing to cut the cost would be to get a less sporty bike. At 18 with 1 NCB, I can insure a 1200 (at least, I think it was the 1200) bandit for ~600-700£. GSXR 600/750 was ~£9k.

Bought a GS500F instead to work up some NCB, get used to the power and see out my restriction first.

Yeah, I know, I had VFR 400 as first bike that I didn't really ride as it was always broken, got fed up, bought a cbr 600 rr, but first two weeks I had to have it insured third party only and that was 970quid. Once I passed the 1 year licence and 1 NcD mark 2 weeks later, much easier, so now I'm on 270 for 3 rd party F&T. Waiting for the difference with 2NCD now.
But yup, I think we will struggle to find something for under 5-6 hundred Crying or Very sad
