Well, according to that feature it now searches 'Google'.

I'm aware a mod may move this to feedback and cripple my blobs but I can't decide if it's an outrage.

I want to search "BCF", if I wanted to search the biggest online search engine, I'd be on that site, not this one.

What's the deal? Confused

Google indexes BCF within minutes of things being posted, it's hard to find a pragmatic argument against using it for searching.

Quite aside from the fact that it alleviates load from the server, Google's search abilities are more flexible and capable.

Labelling it an 'outrage' just makes you sound like an idiot.

Laughing

It defeated the purpose of using it for what I logged on for, and for what it was designed to do.

I logged on to PM Chris, when I searched on the old version you had option to search by poster and within 2 clicks from entering the site you'd done what you intended.

Now, it searches the archives via Google which is credible but it took longer to achieve the result. (I had to go through a thread of pure boringness to find his PM button) Time wasn't an issue for me then, but to take an in-house search facility which often works quite well and adapt it so that a globally used search engine finds stuff externally... not sure it's in BCF's interests.

I'm not knocking the idea, sure Korn's done what's best for him and the site I just think it's going round the houses for what the feature does. - saying that, I'm no less entitled for the OP then any if you's for replying. Karma

Also, Add to that if you search for a particular user as a shortcut to their profile (Like I did for Covdude who flamed me for the OP which isn't a flame at him in any way - there's a direct abuse of the system if a mod could take a look?) it brings up stuff from 1 or 2 years ago, the first page search shows nothing from him in 2012, so how does one find a recent thread from a search result when the ones displayed are a year or two old?

@ Rog; Google is AMAZING for searching internet content, it's does a global search truly fantastically, but searching the murky depth's of BCF isn't what it was designed to do, highlighted by it bringing up threads from so long ago. We're gonna get a load of newbies soon resurrecting ancient threads as a bi-product of this advantage. That's my point.

Absurdly long way of finding someone's username

Alternately, just use the 'find a username' popup in the 'compose a new private message' page. A distinct lack of this round-the-houses approach that you're on about.

Oh, so this isn't you, then?

Seriously; it's a better search engine. If you're struggling to remember people's usernames, then the problem's with you, not the way that BCF is constructed.

I tried your search; I typed 'covdude' into the search box, and the first thing that came up was his profile. You're clearly doing something wrong.

Did you skim my post, or read it?

I had the option of his profile, I dont like the guy, I dont want to view his stats.. I wanted to view recent postings in a thread recently updated, so searching for him would have (oldily) brought up his recent contributions, not stuff from 2 years ago.

I have no issue knowing usernames and finding them, it's a new technique that will take time, of which will tell how improved it is.

I should also point out that as well as the new Google widget, the old forum search is still there if you want to use it...

It doesn't have a very big index of posts so searching by keywords is limited to very recent posts, but you can search by author right back until 2002.

Errr the new google search thing is odd.

Sometimes it's fine
But it seems to not order things by date?

I want most recent posts first D:
This search for example

I know for a fact a more recent leicester bikers thread exists, but i cant find it Sad

What a chump. The Google search is complete pish (sorry for the language), it loses the whole community aspect of the forum. I'm glad the real search is still accessible though, thanks for that.

I think I was too dazzled by shiney new features not to notice the obvious buttons had been left there to be honest. Embarassed Laughing

Thanks for clearing it up though. Razz Thumbs Up

Moron. (I feel pretty harsh typing that, but your post really is pointless).

When you develop the capacity to develop half a brain to make the specs worth it, you will realise my post was neither redundant or out of context. Really, do learn to think before you post.

You must be trolling.

I know you aren't actually that stupid.

(whitedevil, your post is utterly ironic)

Jon, really. Grow up.
