Hello everyone,
new to the forum, made an account originally just to post this up but seems like a good place for everything bike!
All started with me riding my trusty ZX-6R along on a lovely sunny day, then BOOM, elderly woman pulls out, I hit her rear right side and go up over the handlebars, head through the rear side window etc etc. Well luckily I was uninjured, aside from a rather painful genitalea, and some back pain thats developed since.
Anyway, insurance all gets sorted and she admits full liability, so the bike is written off (cat b) and I got the bike (2000 ZX-6R J1 with a carbon micron can) valued at £2250, with buy back at £225, which of course I took as the exhaust system alone is worth that. On a side note, if anyone needs any bits from a ZX-6R J1, I have almost everything for it other than the damaged bits on the front end, send me a PM.
Now, to the point of all this, while my bike is off the road, (and i'm waiting for my 2000 GSXR 750 which arrives sunday ), a courtesy bike was arranged, which as I am still in my 33bhp shackles had to be below 33bhp. At first they offered me a 125cc, which compared with my *ahem* restricted ZXR, wasn't going to be too great, I asked if they had anything else and they came back with a restricted SV650.
Now on looking over the bike, I found this:
https://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx254/frostage/IMG_0294.jpg
And its location on the bike:
https://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx254/frostage/IMG_0295.jpg
I thought this very interesting, as I have read a few times about police pulling people over and saying there should be a label saying a bike is restricted, although I have also heard from police officers that there is no such law, and not even any form of certificate is legal proof (this is also my opinion from the research I've done).
Just thought it would be good to post it up as there is still a lot of ongoing debate on the subject.
I myself will of course be restricting the 140bhp gixxer to 33bhp, doing otherwise would be illegal, same as with the ZXR ____________________ 2000 Gixxer 750

I had this on my SV650S.
When I had my last accident the Police asked about my restriction, I showed them that which they gandered at, said fantastic and never heard anything about it.
It can help a lot, very useful, I see no issues with having it on, saves carrying a certificate! ! ____________________ "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul."

Means absolutely sod all, but definitely a great idea... especially if your restrictors have "fallen out". Which is exactly why Plod should treat it as meaning sod all. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Probably right, just quoting advertised figures, don't doubt it will be quicker than the zxr though!
Yeah done a bit of reading up and it seems like a beaut bit of a giant beater in its time!
Yeah I rode the zxr restricted for a while, it was like putting a little outboard on a yacht! ____________________ 2000 Gixxer 750

Ill keep an eye on that thanks paddy
And yeah, when i was charged £250 to buy and fit a restrictor by my local garage i was pretty pissed off, as i could have fit them myself easily but it would not have been legal unless I dyno'd it. I was also rather annoyed that the £180 kit was simply 4 washers for restricting the flow.
People say the price is because of the certificate, but as soon as you leave the dealers that is just a useless piece of paper, because as rogerborg said, they could 'fall out' the second you get home.
Decided to measure them up and get 10 sets fabricated to sell, 10 sets of 4 washers £90 to fabricate, RRP £1780. Selling them for £30 if anyones interested! ____________________ 2000 Gixxer 750

I have no idea where this idea has come from, but there is nothing in any law that I'm aware of that requires you to do any such thing, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
All that matters from a legal perspective is whether the prosecution can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the bike was generating more than "25kW net power output" at the time that you were stopped. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Fair enough, but that's a contractual issue, not a (criminal law) legal one. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I'd recommend staying restricted if I were you. Is it worth losing your licence, having to go back to a learner, do EVERYTHING again and then STILL get shafted on insurance for the next five years?
I thought it was when I was 17, and I had an accident, non-fault, but I ended up seriously injured. I admitted to the Police that I was unrestricted and then had a tense wait of four months when I received a letter saying that they were not going to charge me with any offences due to the fact my injuries were so severe, they basically thought I'd suffered enough, that and the fact it was non-fault I guess.
However, if I hadn't have been so lucky (or unlucky), I'd have 6-9 points now, had to pay to get my provisional, take my theory, take my mod 1 and my mod 2 all over again and be restricted *again* for another two years and I'd be paying £1400 to insure some old SV650/Hornet TPO.
In reality mate, a bike restricted to 33bhp will top out at a real 100mph, a bit above that too and will still do 0-60 in six seconds or so, depending on the bike. My SV650S was restricted to 33bhp for over a year and to be fair it wasn't that bad. I'd say it actually made me a better rider as I spend over a year learning to get places with reduced power instead of just being able to smush the throttle and do it.
I know this is a rant which you've probably considered and already decided, but I'm just trying to give you some advice. I have made the mistake in the past and boy do I regret making it. Now I look back it just was not worth it. It only takes you looking at a copper funny or acting odd with a police car behind you and you could be found out. I guess my point is the restriction is there for a reason and I realised that after my lucky escape, so I followed it from then on.
Why risk your licence, your bike and your insurance costs when you could just ride a bike with plenty enough power to cruise at 80/90mph on the motorway all day long and still have plenty of fun with (I even beat several unrestricted sports 600s on my restricted SV650S through twisty roads) when, as far as I'm concerned, the reward is pretty small? It will make almost no difference to your day to day riding and may very well make you a better rider in the long run.
If you want to take that risk, go ahead, but be fully aware what could and may happen to you and the full consequences. I consider myself a complete idiot for even doing it in the first place (riding unrestricted) and it just makes me think I should have listened to my Father. It may well be hypocritical but nowadays I see anyone who is unrestricted in their restriction period as silly, it doesn't make much of a difference day to day as 33bhp is plenty enough to be legal (and illegal) on the roads and it is such a huge risk for almost no reward.
If you are pulled by the police, pull out a label/certificate and they choose to dyno/check you anyway, you'll be shafted even more than if you just came out and admitted it probably.
Cheers. ____________________ "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul."

I do understand the risks, I might put the kit back in as I've only got a few months left...
But without it, the thing forking flies.
Paddy, yes I do indeed, throttle restrictor and inlet washers. Thinking of having a few fabricated as I did with the ones for my ZX-6R, £90 for 10 sets, sell them on for £30 per kit as against £180 from FI
And moppy, sounds like its most definately restricted. Easiest way to tell would be to open the throttle quickly in neutral and see how fast the revs rise, should jump very fast all the way through the rev range, if it moves much faster between 1500-4000rpm than it does between 5500-10,000 then fuel is being restricted. ____________________ 2000 Gixxer 750
