Changing down gears and traction

Had my first little scare this morning as I was going down a relatively steep hill and went into first, let it out ever so slightly too quick (but not that quick) and was shocked when I felt the front wheel lose a little traction...

It seems you need to learn how to ride.
Why are you using 1st, you dont need it unless you are pulling away, or wheelies...

On your island, you'll only ever need 2nd.

I've gone down too far and skipped the back a little, but gears do not affect the front.

As above, your gears are more likely to get the back to step rather than lose the front.

Also 1st? I use first for 1 corner I know, this is the corner;

If the corner was a normal corner, your engine should be nicely decelerating when going into the corner and not pulling you though, and on the way out of the corner you should be able to put a bit of power on. i.e. it's no good going into a 20mph in 4th/5th because the engine at idle throttle might still be pulling the wheel, so 2nd/3rd might be more appropriate. If the throttle is off going into the corner, you shouldn't have the feeling of being 'pushed', you should be in a low enough gear that the bike is neutral going in, but you should also have immediate throttle for coming out. On a 125 from memory I'd have thought 2nd for most low speed corners and 3rd for most stuff in a 30mph zone.

On my 600/1200 most around town stuff is 2nd/3rd (right angle bends, 2nd, 3rd for sweepy bends) and out of town, depending on riding - i.e. fun or just getting a move on will be somewhere between 2nd/4th.

It's an interesting corner, although on the way up (on the inside tight bit), it's quite tricky to do quickly, the outside is a bit easier, it's quite steep as well, I always find the bike wants to wheelie on the way up it.

As AL- said, lots of time you get stuck behind cars on this one, it's still a nice road between Hastings > Rye though with plenty of overtaking opportunities. And obviously the Rye end leads onto a nice road to either Ashford or Camber/New Romney.
