If you wear it during daylight hours you will be fine. MET police use them - that's good enough for me. ____________________ NSR125RR - ZXR750H1 - ZX9R E1 - GSF600S - GSF600SK3 - VFR400-NC30 - SV1000N - ST1100-R - CBR900RR-R - GSF1200SK5 - GSF600SK1 - VFR1200FA - GSXR1000K2 - ZZR1400 D8F

There was another thread similar to this where someone told me that wearing sunglasses behind a clear visor is also illegal. Can personally vouch that I've never been pulled for doing that, despite overtaking, filtering past and following police cars.
I've even put them on waiting at the traffic lights before. I knew I had exactly 14 seconds from when the other light went red to get them on, from my zipped up pocket. I managed it. Just. ____________________ 2004 R1 & 2018 XSR900 |

Probably correct, but I wouldn't be 100% convinced which way Magistrate McHangem would go if poorly instructed on the definition of "eye protector". Curiously, wearing glasses marked as impact resistant but without an appropriate BS/E mark might actually weaken your case.
However, in practice, I would be confident that there's essentially no chance of the CPS prosecuting a visor / eyewear "offence", given their current budget. Just don't do anything daft like admit to it or accept a FPN.
I may even be considering a dark visor myself, because I'm so b-b-b-ad to the b-b-bone. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Correct on the first point Sunglasses are perfectly legal as they are not covered under the regulations relating to visors and goggles.
However, they are not the safest thing to wear as I have dealt with numerous crashes where unsurprisingly the sunglasses have caused extensive damage to eyes and face, and in a few cases where the arms of the sunglasses have snapped off and entered the skull via the nasal cavity and entered the brain causing a substantial brain injury.
On top of that, if a helmet fits properly, sunglasses can cause pressure on the side of the head as they get squashed between the helmet and head, which can cause extreme headaches and discomfort therefore a loss in concentration.
So on that basis, I am a big believer that the dark visor in bright weather is the safest if not the legal option, hence why I choose the black visor option.
In respect of goggles, this is one of the annomalies. BSI approved goggles can have an 85% tint (the same as a black visor) quite legally, whereas a visor is only allowed a 50% tint to be legal.
We used this argument when we were trying to get black visors legalised, and whilst we lost the argument overall on the visors (all because the Pedestrian Association were consulted and they felt it was nothing more than pose value and so David Jamieson the then Transport minister through it all out) the legislation regarding visors remained in place as they were. ____________________ It is better to arrive 30 seconds late in this world, than 30 years early in the next |

Had black visors for about 20 years never been pulled for one.
Nearly got done wearing a Simpson once but thats all |
I got busted by Chesire police on the A34 near Congleton in 1993 for riding without a helmet...........I was actually wearing a Simpson Bandit with black visor. (as the bandit was not BSI/ACU kitemarked, it was not legal to ride whilst wearing it, so the only charge applicable at the time was not wearing an approved helmet).
Happy Days!!!
EDIT: My Bandit is Snell stamped, so in 1993 it was illegal to use on UK roads - probably still is.......hmmmmmmm, think i might get it out the loft now summer is on its way! ____________________ Current......Kawasaki ZZR1200 C2H and Kawasaki ZZR600 E7

So, were you charged? daemonoid called it correctly, that'd be worth a "see you in court then", and watch the CPS fold like a nun bluffing on a pair of twos. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

From my experience, the Police will only mind if you are riding with an obviously illegal visor at 10pm at night when it is pitch black and really you shouldn't be doing that anyway as it really does hinder your vision.
My tinted/black visors on my race helmet were fantastic in the day but awful at night, so I just made an effort to swap to a clear visor if it was dark OR if I knew I'd likely have to ride in the dark whilst I was out.
Beware, if you have a crash at night with a tinted and illegal visor on, the Police will not be happy about it. I know that from experience and this was at 3/4pm in the day. If you did the same at night they'd probably want to talk to you about it! !
Interestingly enough, if you have a clear visor on your helmet, you can wear sunglasses that are as tinted as you want and as far as I know it's legal to do so.
TL;DR: Just wear one. Don't use it at night, swap to a clear visor instead for your own safety, as well as others and the law and you should be fine.
