Can anybody tell me exactly what you're supposed to do when you have these 'crocodile teeth' on the road in front of you on the approach to a speed limit sign?

https://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/02/80/36/2803689_dabea378.jpg

Is it to advise you to gradually slow down to the speed limit about to be enforced or is it just a warning of the change in speed limit?

Might have these on my test route, so need to be sure what to do.

Clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

They're just street furniture, they don't have any actual meaning as such.

Wouldn't hurt to check your mirrors as you decelerate for the 30 limit though.

Seriously, they are supposed to make you breath in and in doing so, slow down. Its a cunning psycological trick, see...

If they have no meaning, how do they decide where to paint them?

As far as I know it's simply to make you aware of your speed, like at the end of a motorway.

Other than that, no idea.

never seen these in my life, probably there to highlight a bit more the change in speed limit? maybe they've had issues on that road due to people not clocking?

I've never understood the need to check your mirrors when slowing down. What difference does it make? If you need to slow down, you need to slow down.

Perhaps there could be a huge lorry bearing down on you whose driver is not as courteous and considerate as you are, and as such when you slow you'll end up squashed flat by a 7.5t artic.

Because there might be some dickhead up your arse when you suddenly decide to brake?

Makes less sense checking your mirrors before speeding up, if you ask me

Don't drive through them!

If you drive through them, they'll close and eat your tires!

Stop. Think. Why do YOU think they might be there? Think about road signs, what does a triangle box usually signify? If you actually take a moment to think about the situation, I'm sure you'll figure out their meaning.

You do get them, but usually bespoke and pretty rare:

Triangle road signs are warnings.

Circles are commands.

I think..

What do I know, I've only done the Government certified test.

Notice the speed limit signs just beyond them? They usually signal the fact that you are approaching a new (lower) speed limit zone. They are often accompanied with bumps in the road too.

Just when you see them/feel them, be aware of the new speed limit zone in front of you.

However, in my opinion, if you were paying attention at all you'd notice the new speed limit zone in front of you long before you get near those things.

Cheers! Thumbs Up!

They're used to gauge wheelie distance when you leave villages to help compare with your mates at the next pub.

The highways agency have a host of 'tools' (ha hem) available to highlight potential hazards. As they are limited to putting speed cameras up through fairly strict criteria, they use things like this instead, probably been an incident at that location before.

Should always check your mirrors before you speed up. Not only for the obvious 'check if a copper is behind you' but also there could be someone trying to overtake you in your blind spot, if you accelerate they then get hung out to dry on the wrong side of the road and may struggle to get back in, leading to a head-on smash.

Same way you should always check your mirrors/rear view in a car when you are slowing down.

Mirrors are there for a reason, should be checking them every few seconds matey. Thumbs Up.

after stating i'd never seen these in my life...

....i rode through some last night.
I was afraid they were gonna close on me and munch my wheels.

Oddly though there was no change in speed limit on that road so that rules out that meaning.

They did however proceed a 'slow'...which i didn't *slap on the wrist*
