Now, ok, I may look a tad imposing to some.... but seriously, what happened to eye contact?

It may be more of a problem down south (in Stevenage specifically), but no one makes eye contact... if you try to get it (and by that I mean not avert your eyes like a naughty schoolboy), eventually they look at you with a fair bit of concern...

... then I nod and give them a big smile and suddenly it's all smiles and light on their side.

How brow beaten are we/you as a nation that walking past strangers is now considered some kind of extreme sport?

I did end up in a very odd discussion with a tiny and obviously unstable/drunk fellow on the walk back from the town yesterday, where I was regretting it a /tad/ then, he was the one who started talking at me from 100 yards down the street (and 100 yards past for that matter.... odd chap)

Walking around Nottingham/Hucknall it was a bit better, but still, most people seem to act like any new face is a mugger or something.

Where's the festive cheer?

Laughing

I also think it was like this before the recession, just quite strange after 2 years away from it.

Go for a walk in your local high street. When you go to walk past people, they will do anything they can to avoid it.

It's very weird, and something I've noticed when I came back from SA/Thai before, but after even longer, it strikes me as odd not to give everyone you see a nice smile...

Ho-hum, homework for today class.... go and smile at some strangers.

haha, it's because as a race we're actually incredibly antisocial.

I used to play the 'good morning' game when I was a younger type which involved walking around the shopping centre saying 'good morning' to strangers to see how many would say it back.

These days you get too many "What you lookin at?" if you look someone in the eye.

The answer is, obviously "a neurotic, paranoid dickhead" but they really don't like to be told that.

I get the opposite where I live. If you get eye contact AND YOU WILL. you then end up getting into some crazy long convo about the weather or the neighbours new hedge Rolling Eyes

Can't complain really but you can be on your drive minding your own business and someone start talking to you about your bike or something.

Well, alledgedly you do... but has it ever happened to you? Or anyone you know? I'm not saying you do it to a big group of chavs (although the confident to do that tends to assuage any tension well as well)

(and I'd not answer that, I think a bigger smile would be more unsettling... like that was exactly the reaction you were hoping for Twisted Evil)

Yes, the ambushed my neighbours/bored nutters isn't much better, but a courteous smile without breaking gait isn't exactly much to ask for.

I don't make eye contact with anyone, even people I know/work with. TBH I think I've got a bit of Aspergers.

I don't have a problem, when I look at people they look back and we both acknowledge each other. When people look at me I do the same.
Large groups of chavs are no problem either, although I do find that groups of Indian/Pakistani have issues all of their own.

Yes, it has happened to me, but it tends to be a small-town thing rather than a city thing.

I have a history of rubbing people up the wrong way by looking at them. Just looking someone in the eye is far more powerful than arguing back at them. Then they get all shouty. People do when they feel foolish.

What's really fun is to stare not quite at them - like look at one of their ears or something. Really freaks people out (I just did it to Mrs Angryjonny and she went a bit funny).

People these days expect others to kick their heads in should they look at them wrongly. I'm all for eye contact, however when I was buying a mouse today in Argos the girl behind the counter was suspiciously keen on keeping eye contact.

She was pretty 'n' all, but I'm taken. Laughing

Weird innit. It's obviously a neurosis caused by a complete lack of confidence and self-worth. But try getting them to admit that. (Don't)

Ah you possibly did. I do apologise, I have no idea what anyone else on here looks like, and clothes shops put me well out of comfort zone. Boo hiss. Plus, if you /were/ the guy I think you were, you gave me a churlish and slightly coy grin whilst mincing about the puffa jackets 30m away from me Laughing

My 'challenge accepted' (in response to trying to educate badgery people) got turned into a Vince-Noir orange... dunno why.

I avoid it because I know it's perceived as threatening. That's why animals avoid it too, unless they're intending to do some savagery.

I've found when driving on the motorway if I look at the driver next to me they tend to look back... OK it might take 10 minutes of Burt stare and nudging the side of their car... but they always look round

I made eye contact with a complete stranger who happened to be getting off his Triumph America in the car park at Union Square today, I ended up getting a sit on it because i had intended buying one this week but its a bit of a stretch for my dwarf legs to the pegs and he had had his pegs adjusted. So this guy is stood there holding my handbag for me while im faffing about.......... Im getting a cruiser this weekend but its a mint condition black spirit vt750 and easier for me to manage, would prefer a triumph though but hey I still have a gixer to sell wo who knows Very Happy I have presumed that as a female, making eye contact with men isnt too bad as long as they are sane
