Rang up today to see how much it would cost to change my policy to a bandit, they can't because the largest bike I can have on my policy is a 125 (which they failed to mention when I took out the policy) . This means if i want to insure a bigger bike, I lose 7 months no claims. Surely this is just a scam meaning that when somebody buys a 125 and passes their tests, to have a bigger bike they have to cancel their insurance (pay for that) then take out a new policy for - wait for it - £2000 TPO. So Lexham Middle Finger to you. Plus they tried to charge me £30 for pillion cover when my YBR is barely big enough for me. Rant over.

Lexham only insure 50>125. You bought the cheapest 125 insurer so... yea.

Its the underwriters usually..not the actual insurer. Needless to say my experience with Lexham was fantastic. 125 insurance is very cheap even with multiple riders, claims and lack of security devices Thumbs Up

Keep 125 for a while, get your full year then upgrade Mr. Green

that's what I was going to do, until one of my mates offered to buy my bike for £1800, which is about £500 more than if I traded in

You took out an annual contract and then wanted to change that contract, to something unsuitable to the other party. No scam, just you wanting to change it to something they're not comfortable with. Your responsibility to check if you had hindsight of wanting a bigger bike, not the other way round.

Yes, it is in the contract blah blah, but we can all agree here that insurance is a fucking scam. Regulation is awful, the quotes they come up with seem to be based on black magic, and they try to weasel out of any claim they can.

This happened to me when I passed my test. It seems that a lot of insurance companies are doing what they call "Scooter policies" now which are basically any bikes <=125cc. This means, as you said, anyone who passes their test with their 125cc can't change to a bike above 125cc without buying a whole new policy.

Maybe it's a tactic to delay them from getting their first year of no claims bonus and implicitly delaying their first major insurance discount? Anything to make some more money I guess.

Do what I did, just let your policy run out. I sold my 125cc and got a Thundercat but never informed my insurance company, so a few months later I got a letter with my first year of no claims bonus. Smile. It is crafty, I do agree with you there.

Cheers! Thumbs Up!

It's not a problem isolated to smaller capacity bikes. I rang up my insurers to switch the policy from the 750cc triumph to the 900cc ZX9r. They said my current underwriters (equity redstar through bikesure) wouldn't insure the new bike as the insurance group is too high. I said if they wont change it I'll cancel the old policy and take a new a new policy elsewhere, they (bikesure) said there was nothing they could do. I did a comparison check and bikesure came up as the cheapest again, so I rang them back and asked them about the new policy, everything seemed okay until the call centre dude told me who the underwriters are... yup, you guessed it... equity redstar! I immediately enquired how this could be, as I'd already been told I couldn't insure the kwak with them on my old policy. He went off, spoke to his manager and came back to inform me that the policy scheme (scam? Twisted Evil ) on this policy and my old one is different, so whilst I could not do a straight swap from one bike to the next, I could still take out the new policy with the old underwriters. They did knock 10% off the policy for me and waive all the admin fees, which was nice of them Rolling Eyes .

I hate insurance. It's an annual bum raping.

Cancelling mine with Lexham tomorrow.

£35 admin to get deleted off the system plus losing the initial £60 admin deposit I had to pay. Bit of a joke really.

Have any of you considered cutting out the broker and their usurious admin fees and instructing the underwriter directly? They're the one providing the cover to you.

arry, any thoughts on that?

tried, they just gave me the number for the broker, its just one big massive rip off really, they give you ridiculous prices and when you reluctantly accept them, they charge you another fee for the precious time it takes them to type in your details. Then if something does happen then they try to get out of it anyway they can

To be fair in this case, changing up from a 125 is hardly an unusual situation for a bike rider.

But caveat emptor and all that. If you don't ask (or sometimes even if you do, and get lied to), you can't be sure.

Did you ask ???

I'm currently having a nice flow of emails with E-bike.....

Due to they way they work.

Request permission to contact DVLA.
Request old policy details.

Next you get a letter requesting scans of front/back of licence and counterpart.....
Now they want proof on NCB....
Sent both they a written complaint. Still haven't got a decent reply as to why.
NCB from renewall is not good enough, but as a GOGW they contacted Bennets and got verbal proof.... FFS why do they ask for permission in the 1st place.
Now rang bennetts to get proof of NCB to be told we have sent it and its the form I sent E-Bike Twisted Evil
Still at least bennetts are sending out a further letter for me.

I think this is going to be a very long running complaint as they are failing to answer the questions.

How? I've just looked at a 636 and I'm getting £932 FC.

I'm looking at some quotes for my own 21st birthday present.

Why's it a scam? They're just a broker only insurer, ie they only trade through a broker, not direct to customer.

Redoko - Lexham are a broker, you're correct.

I had a similar problem a year ago, when i wanted to renew my insurance but change it to fully comp for the next year of insurance a month earlier than on the 12 month anniversary. They said that i couldn't change the inurance to fully comp for just one month, as the insurance company didn't do fully comp insurance. Uh. I'd have to wait a month. But i didn't want to take the chance of it being knicked for that 1 month, as it was a high value bike. So lost a years no claims, because they wouldn't/couldn't change the policy. Well pissed off.

Could you not have let the policy run and insure with someone else at the same time?
