How about a link to google site search when the "The server is too busy to allow searching at this time. Please try again later." page is shown?

Ideally an actual search box people can type in to which redirects to google (maybe in a new tab/window to avoid confusion.)

I've managed to build a complete replacement for the phpBB search using Google's Custom Search API. This way it's Google servers doing all the hard work... Thumbs Up

The old search is still there, but I've been able to chuck away many gigs of its search index, so only posts made after this morning will be in there - whereas the Google index has everything since the forum began, and you can run fancier searches.

Not yet, I have to set up some custom indexing rules to get those forums in there and it takes a while for that to go through.

It's pretty good at picking up new threads though, which is one thing I was worried about. Within 30 mins or so.

Can we get a FAQ with examples on how to use the new search?

For example, how do I search all topic titles that were not started by Warped and that contain the word subframe but not the word bent?

Now that I know it, happy to just type it in, but would be nice for others to have the 'Author' part on a form when you click on the search button at the top.

Oh and your search didn't just search the topic titles, which was requested Wink. Results returned where subframe was not in the title a few pages in.

The old search is still here if you want to use it. Currently it only has the most recent 15% of posts indexed, but this is going up slowly as the background indexing process runs.

I am going to experiment with how big I can let its search index get on this server, but since phpBB's internal search isn't anywhere near as scalable as Google it won't ever have all posts indexed.

Don't know if they're all used, but these, I would guess:

I'm trying to find a post of mine from years and years ago. If I search for "Author: LordShaftesbury" I get 0 hits. Am I doing something wrong?

If I copy and paste Korn's example of "Author: Fairies attack" I also get no results.

Try taking out the 'author', but add in:
Code:
+"LordShaftesbury"

So if you were searching for the words 'old' and 'post', you'd use this:
https://www.new.bikechatforums.com/google.php?q=old+post+%2B%22LordShaftesbury%22

Of course, it'd still get you if you were mentioned in someone else's post.

Ok as your user id is pretty distinctive. When using google (prior to this function on here) I would search for "The Voice of Reason" so that I didn't get every post with the letter G in it returned Smile.

Note the date controls in my link above. Haven't tested them however, so don't know if they will pick out individual posts to limit it on etc.
