BCF has once again outgrown its home, and things are starting to creak at peak times. The current server has been around for over 2 years and rather than try and get any more performance out of it, it's time to just take it outside and shoot it.

I've got all the hardware ordered to get this done in the next two weeks or so, 'cos after that I'm moving house myself and I don't want the site to die under the usual spring/summer rush.

The new machine is a pretty big upgrade on the current server, and it's also geographically closer to most of you. The current server lives over the pond in Houston, TX whereas the new machine is in Amsterdam.

There will need to be a few hours downtime at some point to finalise the move. I don't know what day the move will be on yet as there's quite a lot of stuff to configure beforehand.

For the hardware geeks:

cornflakes (current server)
CPU: 2x Dual-core Xeon 2.4ghz (4 threads)
Ram: 4gb DDR ECC Registered
Disks: 2x SCSI 10k RPM disks (raid 1)
Network: 100mbps
Software: Redhat Enterprise 32bit PAE, Apache, MySQL & Memcached

peanuts (new server)
CPU: Quad-core Xeon 3.4ghz with HT (8 threads)
Ram: 8gb DDR3 ECC Registered
Disks: 2x SCSI 15k RPM disks (raid 1) + 2x SSD (raid 0) for dedicated database storage
Network: 1000mbps
Software: Debian Squeeze 64bit, Apache, Nginx, MariaDB & Memcached

UPDATE

I will briefly be taking the site down after midnight tonight to make the final move across, which will mean a downtime of an hour or so while databases get backed up & copied over. The new server is up & configured, and has already been serving BCF's bandwidth-hungry CDN traffic (images/avatars/attachments) via Nginx.

Shouldn't we get 24 hours notice for this kind of thing?

Like when a landlord wants to come into your house.

Just an offer, if you need I can donate a dedicated server of decent spec. I have some at a datacentre that my friend runs just sat there. If it would ease the load I'm happy to donate it, you don't have to cover the costs, it's an offer. Smile.

That way if you wished you could make it a dedicated database server so that the main webhosting server doesn't experience so much load/queries. Or vice versa of course. Could always run and host the bandwidth hugging parts like you mentioned.

If you fancy it, just send me a PM.

Cheers! Thumbs Up!

Cheers for the offer but for a dedicated DB server to offer any benefit it would have to be local (i.e. same switch, private net) otherwise the increased latency of talking to a non-local database would murder performance much more than it would help.

A mirrored CDN server would make much more sense, but with the new Nginx setup and the extra capacity on the new machine that shouldn't be needed now. Unless BCF grows a lot the new hardware should comfortably hack it for another few years... Thumbs Up

I've managed to build a complete replacement for the phpBB search using Google's Custom Search API. This way it's Google servers doing all the hard work...

The old search is still there, but I've been able to chuck away many gigs of its search index, so only posts made after this morning will be in there - whereas the Google index has everything since the forum began, and you can run fancier searches.

As for some feedback - it feels a lot faster! I like it! Laughing

I now know what it feels like to have a religious experience! Laughing!

Yes that was my initial thought with a dedicated DB server, if it was needed badly I could always have it co-located to the datacentre in which the current BCF server is hosted? I wouldn't mind doing that, got a couple so one would be fine. Either that or I'd happily sell one of my dedicateds/rent it out and use the funds to purchase one in the same datacentre as BCF's existing one.

Either way, the offer stands indefinitely. So if you do ever decide you'd like to hook something up, just let me know.

The same goes for vBulletin too, I know you run PhpBB here but I just happen to have a vB 4.0 Publishing Suite/CMS licence I am happy to provide as I no longer use it. In my experience the user database is transferable, of course karma would have to be changed for another modification.

I would offer BCF it's own IRC network, but hardly anyone uses our existing Live Chat/IRC! Laughing!

Anyway, hopefully it holds out for a while as you said but as above, the offer stands indefinitely so if you fancy putting it together, just send me a PM and we'll see what we can do.

Cheers! Thumbs Up!

Quoted smileys are all coming up rather large for me (maybe 10x size) - perhaps related to the scroll bar I just noticed in a longer quote?

Fixed now - glad I got the screen shot in time Smile.
