Is this ranking legit?:

https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

Because it has an old Radeon 5870 down as being much, much faster than a new 7770, a card that is two whole generations ahead. What the hell?

Also, it has a 5870 as being faster than a 5970. Surely that can't be?

I'm looking at replacing my 5770 card so I can play Skyrim, BF3 and Shogun 2 with everything maxed out and I want to pay as little as possible to do it. Any advice?

I thought it went:
(Generation)(Spec)(Version)
With the codes, like
(Generation 5)(Spec 8)(Version 70)
So depending on the cards and the task the spec might be more important than the generation. So say a 6250 would be a bunch slower than say a 4890?
GPU clock speed can be important for some tests, some newer cards can have slower GPU clock speeds but more cores, making them perform less well and single tasks but better in real world situations?

I had a 5870 before I upgraded (still got it) and it kicked fucking arse. Even out performed the lower end 6xxx cards. Can't see it being up to scratch with a 7770 though?

It's not accurate no, given how multithread friendly passmark is, it's surprising that their GPU benchmark doesn't seem to properly support multi card setups going by those charts Neutral

GPU ram is overrated for the majority of people and usage scenarios frankly.

Case in point, nVidia's hilarious GeForce 6200 1gb DDR card. Loads of (slow) memory, zero shader throughput, end result, it was hilariously useless and barely able to a use even quarter of all that ram on it. Some of the 128mb versions were actually significantly faster due to little more than switching out to gDDR3.

512mb is the magic number for a proper gaming orientated GPU now, with more only coming in handy once you crank up the AA. Shader muscle and internal bandwidth are what matters nowadays, hence AMD's direction with the 79x0 series cards and the resulting performance they have.

LOL, you say it is overrated then give a pretty good reason why the type and amount of ram matters......

Confused

4GB of onboard ram with 16x AA turned on BF3 = noice. I tried it on my 5870 and it struggled big time with ULTRA settings.

Well after a lot of googling it looks like the chart is more or less right. A 7770 really is hardly better than a 5770. I thought about getting another 5770 for crossfire but after opening up my case I see that I only have one graphics card slots.

According to the reviews I've read, a 6850 is about on a par with 2 5770s in crossfire mode and as I've found one for £90 I think I'll just go with that.

Maybe when nVidia's next gen of cards comes out the prices of the 78xx series will come down and I'll get a 7870.

the newer loer end stuff (like 7770) is just an improvemnt on die size and power usage. which is handy for doing thing like 24/7 gpu folding

tempurature issue??? that the nice thing about the smaller die and less power = less heat. i could run my main rig 24/7 with both smp and gpu clients, however my electricity bill would be hidious.

after you cooked it did you bake it the oven to try and fix it?

You missed the part about 128mb 6200s out performing the 1gb ddr variant then? Ram is a consideration but it's not what you should be looking for in a gaming orientated card.

To break it down:

Shader throughput = frame rate = What most benchmarks care about.
Memory bandwidth and Amount = Post processing and image quality.

Thankfully most video card vendors stopped under speccing high end cards with budget ram after the debacle of the original plain Geforce 6800 and the amount of ram is mostly a non issue as even current budget cards have a habit of coming along with at least 512mb now.

So in short:

'LOL', No, it doesn't Wink
