I'm kind of considering buying one of these as I've always liked the idea of them, granted they're a bit long in the tooth now but I love the unique look of them and their reputation as strong drag bikes.

Ideally would like to buy something which has had a bit of work done on it already, big bore etc. £2500 excessive for a nice tidy example with a few decent mods? They seem to crop up occasionally at varied prices.

I had been thinking upon the lines of an xjr1300 or something like that, but somehow the 'retro' muscle bikes just don't seem the real deal to me, a little too phoney and not 'hard' enough.

Maybe a trick Bandit would be an alternative?

I'd like something reasonably quick, naked and with a lot of grunt, some handling would be nice too but I'm not really looking for a sportsbike...

I was looking for something with hopefully a bit more go and grunt than my diversion.
As far as I know the modular 900 Triumph triples made about 90 odd hp so I wouldn't have thought there'd be much in it.

An EFE is a good choice, one of the strongest motors ever built and still going strong in drag racing. There's a large fan base out there with all sorts, some standard, some custom. Get on Oldskoolsuzuki and have a look round the air cooled and project sections there's loads of modified and uprated ones to give you ideas. They come up for sale fairly regularly on OSS and a wanted thread always brings out one or two available ones.

That's what I like about them reputation-wise a bit of a cult bike.

I had seen that Oldskoolsuzuki site, will have a nose around there.

I don't know if they have really have anything over or a Bandit or what but they're a bit different and unique enough aren't they. I suppose ideally something with uprated suspension and modern tyres/brakes would be the best bet and a few tuning mods.

Ha I like that. So if you ride the EFE you become like a biking Chuck Norris.

I would have thought the Bandit being a 90s machine benefits from better wheel sizes, suspension and brakes.

Ideally you'd have an efe with later suspension, wheels and modern tyre sizes I would suppose. They tend to look a bit odd though with modern running gear and low profile tyres though don't you think? A bit out of proportion. The 16 inch front original can't be great however.

So you reckon the big bores tend to overheat a bit?

Yes I had my eye on that. Wondering whether its worth 2.5k though it is what I want and ticks the right boxes for me.

When they place classified ad prices on ebay are they absolute, or basically open to offers in the region of giving you an example of where to start at or near?

bandits were built to a budget.


I know but they do benefit from modern tyre sizes allowing a better range of rubber, bigger supposedy sharper brakes etc and also I would guess better 90s suspension is what I meant.

In decent condition I wouldnt want to bet the bandit has better suspension than the EFE.

Wheels arent hard to swap from other suzi with a little work if you want 17" but you can get decent radials in most sizes.

Looks like the dealer snapped this up on the 13th March for £1500 and its now going for 2.5k at their asking price.

When you see the two ads side by side, it does make the dealer price look a bit strong, especially as they aren't offering a warranty within the price (although it does come with a full MOT, so presumably they've sorted the brakes and anything else that needs doing).

To put it in perspective, when you look at the old ad, it links to another one for a really nice GSX1100ET, which looks more original and is probably significantly rarer, but it's 500 quid less.

The thing with any bike of this type, especially a modified one, is it's worth whatever somebody wants to pay for it; I've looked at stuff from this dealer before and they are heavy on their prices, but that might suggest they are open to some hefty negotiation.

It could also mean they are greedy bastards, so I would haggle hard and go in armed with the old ad that tells the true story of the motor, but then I never pay full price for any vehicle.

Yeah. I was thinking more 1800-2k max. Obviously a year's tax and MOT is a benefit but I don't see how it adds 1k to the original bids.

I agree, I would want a few hundred quid left in the bank, just in case that unknown motor lets go.

Actually, if you can't get that at the right price, I would be tempted to spend £800 on something a bit more shed like, then throw £1500 at it, getting it how you want it.

At least that way you know what's gone into it.

err, the XJR and Bandit motors are very different.

And the bandit 1200 has a different engine entirely than the 1250 for a start.

The GSX1400 has a mutation of the B12 motor, which in turn came from the old GSXR1100.

I had a GSX1100F Powerscreen for a while with the 16" wheel. And had a fair few occurences of quite startling instability considering what a big, long and fat old bus the thing was.

Did have some grunt though. Oh yes.
