Why is it cheaper for me too insure a faster bike??

I did try and find something like this before posting but couldn't so here's my question...

I currently have a kawa Z750 which is insurance group 13 (I think)

I tried to get a quote on a 2001 R6 because there only group 14, supposedly,

It came too more the triple the price of my z750?

But when I try too insure a Z1000 which is insurance group 15 and has 12 more bhp then the R6 it comes up cheaper then my current bike the z750 /:

Which leaves me rather baffled tbh because I would much rather have the Yamaha then another non faired bike

Any ideas as too why this is??

Because the style of the bike..The R6 is probably faster than both your 750 and the 1000 anyway. It's not just BHP that insurance look into, it's also the all round package of the bike. A Z1000 for example may have 115bhp and the R6 110Bbhp but the R6 will still deliver it at a more brutal rate than the others.

Statistics, bike type, repair costs... many factors affect quotes for different bikes with the same rider at the same postcode.

The type of rider that would choose the R6 over the Z1000 is probably factored in, since it seems every next rossi wannabe is 'gettin an ar6 innit'.

Look at alternatives, such as the CBR6 or ZX6R you may find the quotes cheaper.

Yea I no the R6 will deliver the power better but that still doesn't explain why an R6 is only insurance group 14 and a Z1000 is 15?

The only reason I looked at the R6 is because it was 1 insurance group lower then everything else I was looking at...

Sports bike tax, nothing more, nothing less unfortunately.

When I went from my Futura (Tourer end of the sports tourer scale) to a Honda SP1 my insurance more than doubled, surprised me given that the SP1 would be much less likely to be written off at the mention of a crash and only had ~10bhp more.

Insurance companies don't base it purely on BHP but on overall risk. Indirectly the premium will be related to how much they end up paying out on different bikes...if R6s result in more payout than Z1000s they will cost more to insure. That will incorporate the type of people that ride them, the way they're ridden, how attractive they are to thieves, how easy they are to crash, how much they cost to fix etc. etc.

The R6 is covered in expensive plastic, and (statistically) ridden by loons. Just ignore the 'group', it means nothing.

Blame the chav's that use the R6 to kill kittens.

You might find that 750/1000cc sports bikes are also cheaper to insure than a 600cc supersports, for me they are. Presumably because less are wrapped around trees or driven into convents full of nuns than the 600 class bikes.

As Donny said, a 750/1000 is sometimes a bit cheaper than insuring a 600.

Stuff like a TL1000R or an Aprilia Falco are damn cheap to insure...even being litre twins!
