You shouldn't need to re-sorn it no! But I would check it online with your doc reference number once you bought it, just to be sure Wink

Technically, yes.

In practice, no, you've got at least a month's grace.

SORN is removed when changing owner I believe.

Yes, yes you do. Unless you'll be insuring it rather swiftly afterwards, as Roger says, you get some grace.

Double yep Thumbs UpThumbs Up

When the bike is registered to another keeper, any existing SORN expires. Re-sorning is easy though. Wait till you have the V5 back, then SORN it online. It takes 5 minutes, if that.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but you've got me worried now Laughing

This is the status for a bike I bought in July last year:
Date of Liability 01 09 2012
Vehicle Status SORN Not Due

That means SORN is due on 1st Sept this year, doesn't it?

Im sure there was a new ruling coming saying that once a vehicle was sorned, you didnt need to renew it. It would be sorned until you taxed it again.. But im not sure when that was coming into force.

No dates, but press release here https://www.dft.gov.uk/news/press-releases/dft-press-20111215

Yeah. I just did it anyway for piece of mind.

One of the steps said "The SORN is not due until September, are you sure you want to continue?"

So looks like new owners don't need to renew. I'd check anyway though, in case I've just been lucky.

Check the SORN slip. The one for the bike that I bought had a bit saying that it expires on such a such date or when the vehicle changes owners Thumbs Up

I don't see why it isn't already - surely it's more effort for them this way! Laughing

Not that I have anything against these guys in principle, but what makes you think they can help?

OP, is this the same bike that you/your dad may, or may not, have paid for, which you're intending to sell by the end of this week, so you can pay the original seller?

If so, you don't really need to worry about SORN, unless the original seller has got the wrong end of the stick and applied for a new V5 in your name, thinking that you'd bought it to keep it, not tonce it up and sell it on the next week.

New keepers do need to re-SORN. This is just the DVLA being their usual incompetent nobwads. I received a SORN acknowledgement email and letter, followed a full month later by a demand to either insure or SORN the same vehicle. Rolling Eyes
