Hello

I have my mod 1 tomorrow

When you put the bike on the stand for the parking bit do you have to use the center stand or is the side stand ok ?

I aslo heard that when doing the figure of 8 it is ok to go round the last yellow cone ..is this true?

Although I have read all the threads on Mod 1 ,cover to cover ,any tips would be greatly appreciated ...taking it in Erith.

Use the side stand, less room for a mess up.

You wont need to go round the last yellow cone, if you do I'd reconsider riding a bike as its VERY wide.
You'll not need to go round that cone at all.

Hi,

You can use whichever stand you prefer. Remember that the side stand can be easier to use and you can leave it down during the walking maneuvre PROVIDED that you don't drag it when doing it.

You can go round the last yellow cone since the slalom and figure of 8 are really 2 maneuvres - provided you can do the slalom then technically you are going round just 2 blue cones for your figures of 8.

A tip would be to turn up at the test centre with full protective gear and a high viz vest etc. This shows the examiner that you are serious about everything and they might not be in a bad mood and give you a set of stupid minors that do nothing but frustrate you. I've done a MOD1 with an examiner who really didn't want to be there (was making excuses about a sore throat and not really wanting to go outside) and he was making all sorts of issues about the side stand which, it is well known, cannot be a fail.

Best of luck!

You'll need most gear for the mod1 anyway, don't go with trainers or in trackies, wear bike clothes and boots/gloves.

As Paddy says, wear full gear. The DSA may refuse your test if you don't.

Use the side stand - it's easier with less room for error.

Ask!

Some examiners don't like it, some don't mind. Mine said (because I asked to be sure) that you could go round the last cone if I needed, but I shouldn't need to, but so long as I was in control of the bike then it was fine Thumbs Up

From the DfT site:

As a general guide the following is an indication of the minimum level of clothing acceptable:

motorcycle boots
sturdy footwear or boots that provide support and ankle protection
textile or leather motorcycle trousers
heavy denim trousers
heavy denim jacket with several layers underneath
textile or leather motorcycle jacket
motorcycle gloves

The following are examples of clothing that are not acceptable:

lightweight training shoes
canvas basket ball trainers
any form of clothing with areas of exposed skin
shell suit or lightweight tracksuit
distressed ripped jeans
lightweight fleece or hoody
no gloves or skiing gloves

In all cases it’s a legal requirement that riders wear an approved and correctly fastened motorcycle helmet,* with suitable eye protection (*an exception is made for members of the Sikh religion wearing a turban).

Thanks everyone

I have the jacket, boots and motorcylce gloves, hoping jeans are ok as my only pair of motorcyle trousers have a busted zip...only happened today and got myself a hi vis vest now too.

Thanks for the link mightyimp ...I have watched a few and already seen this one and found it really good...got sidetracked and started watching all his others on you tube ...is this you ? very helpful

I went to the test center today to watch a few , there was one guy who did the parking by doing a sort of three point turn .I have only practiced on pushing the bike round as a U turn into the next bay.

Does the instructor ask you to park in either of the bays , as the learner parked in the left hand one and if that was me I would then be on the wrong side of the bike to be on the inside of the turn...will I be able to use the right hand bay as starting point or do I not have any choice?

The only bit I am worried about is ....the whole test ... not really ...I am worried about the speed emergancy stop and swerve avoidance.

Yes, they're fine for the purposes of satisfying the DSA .

Of course, they're actually next to useless in an off, so if you do fall off and road rash yourself, feel free to sue the pants off of the Crown, since they've accepted that they have a duty of care to you, but failed to discharge it. Wink

Either bay, and try not to worry, you're just going for a bike ride.

Took mine at Erith.

Maybe you'll get Matt as your examiner, seemed pretty decent and didn't have a stick up his jacksy!

He asked me to pick the bay and even let me decide which way I wanted to do the corner (left bend or right) before the speed trap maneuvers. Thumbs Up

Enjoy if you can, you certainly have the weather for it Wink

Had my Mod1 today... (on a 650 for DAS). Was a baking hot day and the examiner was like "if you want, leave your jacket unzipped as far as you feel comfortable with". Had been having a good chat with her and my instructor and a few others when we went in before my test so friendly enough.

Was properly going OTT on everything like the checks and that, in the end she stopped even looking to see if I was checking over shoulder before setting off.

Passed with 1 minor, and that was on the u-turn cos I JUST touched one of the white lines (my instructors fault too, he told me to use all the space, so I did. had been happily doing a u-turn in 1 and a half parking bays all morning).

One thing I will say to people who've not yet taken Mod1... SLOW CONTROL... get that right and you'll be fine. Back brake, revs and slip the clutch. Without being cocky, I found it easy, because my instructor "over taught" me.

3 week wait for that, got it booked though. This out-of-season weather we're having means every man and his dog wants a bike and so lessons and tests are hard to come by.

Fortunately I booked my lessons back in Feb when it was cold n wet and my instructor put me (and others like me) as a priority over the ones who are ringing up this last week or two since its been sunny so I've had my lessons as and when I wanted. Shame that the DSA don't operate like that though, earliest (afternoon) test I could get was 3rd week of April, but instructor is all booked up now so won't be able to get a cancellation.

Oh well, just gives me a bit of time to learn the area better and save up for my bike

Nice one. Did you get through it and think "What was all the fuss about?" Wink

Shame about the delay in sitting Mod 2. One of the advantages of going standard on your own 125 is getting cancellations - I passed Mod 1, came home, got Mod 2 booked for the next morning. Very Happy

Well I failed Crying or Very sad ...miserably Embarassed

Not really sure what happened but I was a complete bag of nerves and these got the better of me .. Sick

After approx 45 min journey to the test centre, on the way having to do almost emergancy stop, several swerves I know I can ride ...just got real nervous..... the examiner was really good about it, nice guy.

I put my foot down on the slalom.....after telling myself a thousand times not to look at the cones ...I probably did just that...
I knew I had failed and test was stopped .....

Think I also put too much pressure on myself trying to get tests done before CBT runs out in mid April

I feel such a failure and now need to move/cancel mod 2 book another Mod 1 but looks like I will need to do CBT again due to time limits.

Any tips for calming the nerves ...

Yeah, it was easy.

First couple of lessons I ever had on the 125 were in the steep hills of sheffield on the estates and side roads, so lots of slow riding and stopping, starting, hill starts etc, so got the clutch control down well right from the start.

Then first lesson on the 650 was a full day riding round in town and country roads, then from then it was in a retail park car park doing mod1 stuff, so slalom, figure of 8, emergency stops and avoidance.

Was doing the avoidance at much higher speeds than necessary, think my highest successful one was 51mph, consistently doing them in the very high-30s as well so when I came to doing it with twice the run-up on the Mod1 area it was easy as pie (although did lean so hard I could feel my toe scraping the floor!)

Everyone I've asked said Mod1 was the one they were worried about though, so hope I don't get too complacent or cocky about Mod2
