Do bikes have to be restricted to 33bhp? many people are passing their tests and going for 400cc bikes? surely they would have to have restrictions? is it worth me doing my test and getting a bigger bike? i plan on going to university so im getting a 125 for efficiency, is it worth me getting a bigger bike after passing my test? or should i just rely on cbt for now and do my test when i can? it would be nice to remove the L plates. Also on a cbt can you go on a motorway?

The Honda Bros 400 doesn't need to be restricted to 33bhp.

One of the reasons I got it.

Yes but you'll get arrested for riding without a license.

No then, I guess! Laughing

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

If you do your restricted access (A2) license then you are restricted to 33bhp for your first two years of having it, after that you can ride anything you want. The A2 test is normally done by young people as you can't do the DAS test (which lets you ride any bike straight away) until you are 21. Pretty much all bikes can be restricted to 33bhp, the kits are made by FI International, have a look on their website for details of the bikes they make kits for. It is worth doing your test as you are allowed to then ride bigger bikes, use motorways and carry pillions. Also having a full license instead of a CBT will make your insurance cheaper.

I would say get the 125 to start with and use that for 6 months or so, then when you are ready look at doing your test, take a couple of lessons to just brush up on what they'll be looking for in the test and you won't have many problems.

You can if you would prefer take a training course and then your test straight away and get a 33bhp bike instead of a 125, if you can do that this time then I would suggest doing it as you will be better on a 33bhp rather than a 125.

any idea on the cost of the training course? and what bikes would i be limited to with 33hp? anything which is significantly better and more reliable than an NSR 125?

In order to take your A2 test you need to show a valid CBT certificate.

You have to do your CBT no matter what test you are doing.

I wouldn't use this as a main reason to fork out for training/test though. I found that for many insurance companies there is no difference on a full license, compared to provisional. Stupid, i know Thinking

Though the sooner you pass the test, the sooner the 2yrs is up. Think there are also insurance benefits when you've had your full license for 12months etc.

If you want a new bike when you pass, the insurance companies seriously load the premiums for anyone going fully-comp who has had their license for less than a year.

To do your CBT on your own bike you will need to get someone to ride it to the centre for you as you cannot ride on the road without a CBT certificate. You can ride it home though when you pass Thumbs Up

How do you know that it sucks, when you haven't rode a 33BHP restricted bike? Razz

I get a fair bit of fun out of my 11bhp 125.

there's a list in a thread somewhere that says all the bikes that don't need restricting. Use the search button ^^.

If your going to start riding best thing to do is complete your CBT as soon as possible before the winter closes in. I recommend hiring the bike from the school because if you haven't riden a bike before its possible and very common that you'll either drop it or fall off. You don't want to do that with you're own bike.

Then sort yourself out a a cheap 125cc for a few months to actually learn how to ride before taking your test. Don't forget you'll also need a theory test pass before you can book your practical test. If you're younger than 21 then the best practical test to take is the A test which will restrict you to 33bhp for 2 years.

Phone a training centre and have a chat they'll tell you all you need to know. Expect to pay between £80 - £120 for a CBT with bike hire.
