Put a new battery on last month and yesterday noticed acid leaking so took checked battery and it was all swollen and warped.

I know this can be either the stator or the rectifier regulator.

I did some test's but have no data on the r/r to go on.

the battery is toast so borrowed a mates to check voltage across terminals when at 4000 rpm and its 17 volts nearly 3 volts more than the recommended so I hate to think what its like at 7 or 8000 rpm. So am I right in thinkng the r/r is knackered. I checked the resistance from the stator and that was within the range.

Any more data to go on would be really helpful. I dont want to go buying things if not needed.

It's the reg/rec if you're getting excess voltage like that. 15 volts is usually the max you see quoted as an output, 17+ is going to fry stuff.
R1 reg/recs are usually pretty strong, Honda owners (VFR and Blackbird usually) commonly change their Honda ones for R1 items same as Suzuki owners used to use Superdream ones years ago.

cheers Bezzer for input, youd think the main fuse would blow or some safety device would be in circuit to stop battery from melting or worse exploding. Funny how nothing else has gone just the battery's started to bulge and deform and leak acid now holds no charge Very Happy .

There is conflicting advice about the reg/rec some yamaha owners are saying that this failing is quite a common fault along with the stator. If I can get hold of my mate he got exactly same bike so I can cross reference my data with test on his but the sods down the pub. Thumbs Up
