Tried go karting today, and I must say, I've not had such fun in a long time....!

I found so much more exhilirating than track days becuase I could really push the kart (becuase I didn't give a toss about it) - something I could not do with bikes and cars on track days.

I was pretty good at it, getting close to track records, on my first go.

Would like to just recomend go karting to those who haven't tried it. I thought it was going to be glorified dodge-ems, but you do actually have to think about racing lines, etc. I found myself flat out and skidding round corners. I could never do this with a car (and avoid a hospital visit)!

Only real downside is too many kids, but I suppose you have to expect that.....do think there should be adults only karting.

I think thats a biker thing. When I've been with non biking friends I've usually been the quickest, and often the quickest on the track, but at BCF karting I was fucking terrible in relative terms.

Unless it's outside and wet in which case you have the advantage.

I' sure there is someone on BCF who does kart racing. I know he keeps it quiet though. Rolling Eyes

I've never been to a track day, but have tried karting a few times (track and off road), one of my friends was 21 stone at the time and he managed to shoehorn his arse into a kart, so if you have no shame then the weight shouldn't be a problem.... just remember all the kids are going to laugh when you try getting out (or maybe it was just the show my friend made of it).

As for cars I've owned I've more or less kicked the crap out of all of them, tried drifting in an espace when there was a bit of snow on the ground.... and I had the wife and kids in the car at the time, ended up doing about 3 laps of the homebase car park.

Same with a small dirt track local to me... quite a few times I've gone skidding round there to practice my control... even allowed one of the kids to try.... almost needed a new clutch trying to teach him how to do a burn out.... he thought he had to bring the clutch up to biting point with his foot hard on the accelerator

Negative. You can hold higher corner speed due to increased grip. Lighter chaps tend to be faster in a straight line. I weigh 10 stone, and I have a mate who is 6 foot 4 and weighs 15 stone, and we're very evenly matched. He always pulls away in the corners and I pull away in the straights.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

does that mean someone at 12 1/2 stone would be better on both straights and corners then?

I always thought it was all about braking, lines and throttle on the way out the curve.... also I've noticed with karts if you pump the pedal quite quickly on straights it seems to give a bit more speed... although I don't claim to be any kind of racing driver and it could just be that I'm crap with my foot to the floor Rolling Eyes

Love karting, dont get to go as much as id like. Last time was a christmas doo with the lads from work. Being the lightest got the speed advantage & was a complete bitch & blocked the inside on every corner Laughing

Everyone came out of 60 laps complaining that their arms were killing, except me, guess thats from being on a bike, anyone else found that?

I think this thread inspired a little trip to a kart track earlier, was immense fun but knackering.

You crashed on the 3rd corner and I went in to the pits on the first lap hahaha. Was set out on 2 levels of an old mill though with up and down ramps.
