After much advise from you guys the best way to get maximum cash for my current bike is to sell private.

I thought advertising on here, ebay , gumtree, friday-ad and facebook would give it maximum audience

only problem is i dont know what to ask. the best offer ive had for it so far is 850 which if im honest is a lot less than im hoping for

its a xr 125 with 11 months mot and 7000 miles on the clock. see picture attached it just had new chain and sprocket and had new fork seals last year

in my ideal world i want 1200 as i see ones on ebay with higher mileages go for more. Am i asking too much or expecting too much

If you want 1,200 then advertise for 1,350 and say your welcome to receive offers. Then you can get bartered down to 1200.

People travel from quite far to buy bikes. My YBR I traveled the width of the country, and my SV I travelled the length. Don't underestimate how far people are willing to travel.

If 125's are popular there and you have a low mileage example then I don't see why you'd have a problem.

Just advertise for higher and if you have no hits then drop the price say after 3-4 weeks.

All depends how quick you want rid.

If it was me selling then I would ebay it on Thursday night starting at 10pm for 10 days so you cover two weekends and get maximum interest, and write a disclaimer that you reserve the right to withdraw at anytime as it's advertised elsewhere.

Then go ahead and advertise it everywhere else in the hope that someone buys it for the amount you want. (i.e. Advertising for say 1300 and being knocked down to 1200).

Then you should have all bases covered. If you don't sell it from private ad's then ebay will take up the slack and you should get what you want for it other bikes are going for more on there. If you get offers through ebay in your mail and they are the same or above your price then try to settle it outside of ebay to save on the fees.

Watch out for the E-Bay fees, roughly £100 for every £1000 selling price. Best to advertise on E-Bay and take a lower offer so you can pull it off the auction and avoid the fees.

I think the key to a good ad is always good pictures. I don't care what you say, without images to back up the condition of the bike I'm not going to be interested.

So put the bike somewhere nice, get the camera settings right and snap away. Ideally you want one of each side, one of the back and front, some of the tyres and other consumables (chain/rear sprocket). I'd then want to see images of the speedo, maybe the tank and the condition of the seat. It really shows you cared about the bike rather than simply took a shit photo at night on your camera phone, cutting off the bottom half of the bike with stuff leant up against it.

Oh and for the record I think £1200 is a realistic price, but be prepared to take something slightly lower.

Okay,

Quote:
This is an auction/advert for a <year> Honda XR125.
Approx. 7000 Miles on the clock, although this will increase as I use it every day for my 10mile commute to and from work.
Sailed through the MOT, 11 months remaining.
Brand new chain and sprockets fitted last week.
Fork seals are good as new.
Tyres have plenty of life left in them.
Brake pads have a fair bit of meat left on them.
This is a quality bike that has never let me down.
Bulletproof Honda engine, the same as the CG125.
Looks great, sounds even better.
Will happily do 50mph+ unless you are a whale like me.
Easily do 180miles to a tank costing about <enter price> to fill up.

Feel free to contact me through Ebay/Gumtree with any questions.

Get pics from every angle.
Close ups of any damage.

Thumbs Up

If listing it on ebay add the following at the bottom.

Quote:
Boring stuff.
You are bidding to buy, not to view/haggle.
I will not ship to your brothers uncle in some far off land.
Less than 10 feedback, contact me 1st otherwise your bid will be removed.
The bike must be collected within 3days, unless agreed otherwise before you bid, or I will re-list it.
If you are the lucky winner of this awesome bike a £100 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit must be paid within 24hrs of the auction ending.

Give as detailed a description as you possibly can and make sure it is spelled correctly. Nothing puts me off an eBay ad faster that someone who cannot use punctuation or capital letters. CaNsA's outline is a good place to start, fill in the details then expand it a little more. Be honest but don't give potential buyers something to pick at! Include information about all of your paperwork, MOT certificates etc etc. The stuff about how many miles to a tank and cost of filling up is pretty useful too.

Pics are very good, if there are any bad points about the bike make sure that you photograph those too. Take pics of your paperwork, V5 and keys too but make sure you blur out your address on the images. As someone above has mentionedget pics of the speedo, all angles, engine etc. I like to see pics of the wheels too so I can see the condition of the rims and tyres.

Don't be in a hurry to sell. If you need the bike gone by Easter then trade it in at a dealership and bend over. If you want £1200 ono hang on a bit longer and advertise like mad. My xt125 cost me £1700, I sold for £1650 to a guy who travelled from a few counties away to buy it for his son. It was listed for a good few weeks with some silly offers and timewasters but I stuck to my guns and got my price.

Patience is a virtue Thumbs Up

Wouldn't work. As advise is a word.

e.g. I advise you not to use advise when you mean advice... this is good advice. Wink

Not 10% fees for vehicles on Ebay.....£10 listing fee & £20 when it sells - flat rate (at least it was when I sold a bike a few weeks ago). Personally I would do a 10 day listing on buy-it-now for £1399 with best offer feature available, I'd set this to automatically reject all offers below £1099. DON'T accept Paypal as a payment method!

Definitely get a couple of photos of any imperfections. It shows you're honest with the condition of your bike and not a dreamer who thinks its completely show room mint. Thumbs Up

+1 on that front. I am instantly put off when I read an ad that tells me that 'this byke has recantly had a fool rebuild of it's breaks and has brand new tires'*

So, use a spell check AND get someone to read it through for you. It's only a private ad, but professionalism goes a long way.

Just wondering, why shouldnt you allow test rides?

Definatly take photos of small faults like scratches. Makes you look honest.

And you have the full asking price in your hand while they ride around on your beloved bike. Be sure to really check insurance if you do this, otherwise you could be liable if they wheelie in to a pile of kittens. You could always offer them a pillion test ride, just to show everything is working as it should.

Vehicle sales have a different fee structure, so you don't get clobbered like that.

If you're putting it on eBay, I'd suggest a "classified" ad rather than an auction. Essentially, just advertise that it's for sale and how much you want put in your hand, rather than dicking around with the hordes of drunken fantasists and scammers.

Test rides means full cash in hand, some form of ID with their name and address on it - so that you can rat them out if you get a Section 172 later - and you can't know or have a reason to believe that the rider isn't covered for 3rd party liabilities.

Be aware that if you're selling 125, it's unlikely that potential buyers are going to have "other vehicle" cover for it. To make it their problem, get them to sign a statement confirming that they're covered, or be sure that you can come up with a witness later who'll swear that they said it.
