Good people, the never-ending starting issues continue with my ER5.
Thought I'd take a shot here before I call someone out.

It basically refuses to start at the moment.
No problems during March - got it started every time (though I usually had to start it without choke and then gradually pull the choke on once it fired).
Now, after 4 days of not riding, the thing just wont fire.

Sometimes the starter motor turns over but doesn't fire at all. This is more frequent when leaving the choke unopened.
Sometimes the starter motor tries but then just stops suddenly (maybe after turning over once). This is more frequent when opening the choke.

2+2= problem with the choke, although I'm new(ish) to motorcycling so my guess is probably as good as any average Joe's.

Cheers guys, appreciate any thoughts

Id do a test on your battery first if it turns over once then stops.

Cheers man I'll look into that. To my knowledge the battery has never been renewed - it's ancient.

Everyone says that, I must have got the runt of the litter...!

Tried bumping a couple times but no luck - difficult to do though as it's 1 down 5 up with the gears, so cant get it into 2nd.

I'm going to Halfords in a mo to get a new battery, will post if that solves the issue.

Sounds like battery, almost exactly like the symptoms on my GPZ over winter as teh battery failed. New battery, starts second turn Thumbs Up I'd get a multimeter on it before buying a new one though!

Kawasaki's are fitted with a 'positive neutral finder' Which essentially wont allow you to shift in to second gear unless the bike is moving. This is a ball ache when you want to bump start but bloody useful in traffic.

Must be broken on my GPz though...I'm forever trying to find neutral and getting 2nd!

As far as i understand, it works using 3 small ball bearings on the shaft that are thrown out via centrifugal force thus enabling the shift to second whilst moving.

Removing the system requires the crank cases to be split!

Bit of useless info for you there Wink

Haha this thread is turning into 'The Pros and Cons of the 1 down 5 up Manual Transmission System'!

Aye, what Hazza said Thumbs Up

To update, I didn't bother with the volt-meter as the battery looked terrible: covered in grime, filthy nuts and connectors, etc.

Just letting the acid drip into the battery now as I type, in about 10 mins or so I'll go hook it up and fire it up. Will be a massive relief if it fixes the starting issue as all the other problems that came as a consequence of me buying a cheap motorcycle have been more-or-less resolved.

Will report back, thanks for all your help and insights chaps Thumbs Up

Not quite, 1 down rest up is common - the thing Hazza's on about is an oddity of Kwaks alone as far as I'm aware. It works on mine sometimes Very Happy

Hmmm in the short time I've had my ER5, perhaps the only thing I've never had a problem with is it's positive neutral finder - seems to always get it right for me.

Anyway, as subject suggests, it's fixed now Smile and god damn am I so flipping happy! Very Happy Very Happy

Fitted the new £55 battery, choke on full, approx 0.38 seconds after touching the starter button it fired up like it should Smile

Cheers for all the help chaps Thumbs Up really appreciate it
